Denmark's Prime Minister: ‘Greenland not for sale’

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday January 7, that only people of Greenland can determine the island's future after Donald Trump Jr. arrived in Greenland's capital Nuuk for a private visit.   Donald Trump had attempted to purchase the island in 2019 which Frederiksen had described as “absurd,” while acknowledging Greenland’s growing independence as “legitimate.”  On Tuesday Donald Trump declined to rule out military or economic action as part of his desire to have the U.S. take back control of the Panama Canal and acquire the Danish territory of Greenland.  #Denmark #Trump #DonaldTrump #Greenland #politics

00:00I would of course like to add a few words to the discussion that is taking place right now about Greenland and make it very clear

00:06that seen with the Danish government's glasses, Greenland is the Greenlanders.

00:11It is a very, very proud people, it is a language, it is a culture, it is a population that is its own

00:19and as the chairman of the Natarkasuisut, Moise Edhjø, said, then Greenland is not for sale.

00:25USA is our absolute closest ally. We would always like to work closer with the Americans.

00:31This applies to all defense and security policy issues.

00:35This also applies to the North Atlantic, where tensions are rising.

00:39And we have seen with Western glasses a very clear interest in that it is the USA,

00:44when it comes to the whole area, that it is the USA that plays a big role and not, for example, Russia or other countries.

00:53But Greenland is the Greenlanders.

00:55There are many words in the air right now. First of all, I think we should keep calm.

01:01And then of course we have to stick to the principles that we are working on and that we are working under.

01:07We have a need for a very, very close cooperation with the Americans.

01:10We have that as Denmark, we have that in NATO.

01:13We also have that as a rivalry, because we are in a very, very restless world.

01:18And we are part of the same alliance. So that's important on the one hand.

01:24And on the other hand, I would encourage everyone to respect that the Greenlanders are a people.

01:33It is their country we are talking about here.

01:36And it is only Greenland that, in my eyes, can determine and define Greenland's future.
