A decade after the deadly assault on the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo,
00:08
France paused on Tuesday to honour the victims, but also to grapple with the evolving challenges
00:13
of free expression and terrorism.
00:17
President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo led solemn tributes at the site
00:22
of the attack, where 12 people were killed on the 7th of January 2015.
00:28
Speaking to local media, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau cited the recent
00:32
attacks at public gatherings in Germany and New Orleans as grim reminders of why France
00:37
must maintain a very high level of caution.
00:40
Last year, we unleashed 9 attacks.
00:44
That's more than since 2017.
00:47
That means that our services and France are considerably rearmed.
00:52
But that means that the threat is still there.
00:56
And we must not only face it, but also see the terror of this threat, which is Islamism.
01:02
The attack on Charlie Hebdo, carried out in retaliation for the newspaper's irreverent
01:06
caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, ignited fierce global debates about the limits of
01:11
free expression.
01:13
Ten years on, Charlie Hebdo said its research shows that while a majority of the French
01:18
still believe in the fundamental right to caricature, younger generations increasingly
01:22
criticize satire they see as divisive or insensitive, particularly toward marginalized
01:27
communities.
