Data reveals that 2024 was Darwin’s second hottest year on record

If you thought 2024 was hotter than normal in Darwin, then you've been proven right. Data has revealed the city sweltered through its second hottest year on record in 2024. It comes as uncertainty hangs over exactly when the monsoon will arrive to finally cool things down.

00:10Both the maximum and minimum temperature preliminarily looking to be the second highest on record.

00:18I'm not surprised, climate change is pretty bad and I'm really hot, sweating.

00:23There has to be one air conditioner on in a room, at least.

00:27And then everyone scrambles to that room.

00:29Six hours fishing every day in the heat, so a lot of water and no fish.

00:35The median temperature was 28.5 degrees Celsius last year, just 0.2 degrees off the record.

00:43The average maximum temperature was 33 degrees, 0.9 degrees hotter than average.

00:50The minimum temperature was also 0.9 degrees above average at 24.1 degrees.

00:572025 has started on a similar trajectory with the monsoon running behind schedule

01:02and forecasters are uncertain over exactly when it will hit.

01:07In the short term we don't see signs of the monsoon.

01:12We're in a little bit of a suppressed phase in terms of the synoptic drivers that control that.

01:18There's probably a bit of hope for respite from about the third week of January.

01:23Before relief does arrive, workers are being encouraged to stay safe while on the job.
