Victoria’s most endangered mammal may have survived Grampians bushfires

Four southern brush-tailed rock wallabies have been sighted, raising hopes that a colony may have survived the Grampians bushfires.

00:00So, we know that the Brushtail Rock Wallaby colony has been impacted by the fires and

00:11we know that it did burn quite hot through that area.

00:29The critical focus for us is getting in there as quickly as possible to make sure that we've

00:33got enough food and supplements for those animals to survive.

00:37They can be quite clever in protecting themselves from the initial fire and then that's why

00:42it is so critical to get in there as quickly as possible to make sure that they have enough

00:47food.

00:48We know that the fire's gone through and we know that food will be scarce, so the team

00:52have been developing food packages, care packages, which consist of a few different types of

00:57food.

00:58So, there's carrots, sweet potato, there's some lucerne and there's also some macropod

01:03or kangaroo pellets, which can be dispersed initially through dropping out of a helicopter.

01:09The idea is to strategically place them at a few different locations in and around the

01:14colony so that there's enough food for them to venture out and access and still maintain

01:19that location and be able to protect themselves from those predators that exist.
