00:00Excitement is in the air as Penangites count down the days to Chinese New Year at the end of January.

00:07In Georgetown's heritage enclave, approximately 2,000 red lanterns have been strung across streets,

00:13poles and buildings ahead of the highly anticipated Penang Chinese New Year celebration, or Miao Hui, on February 1st.

00:20Armenian Park alone features more than 300 lanterns,

00:23which will be illuminated daily from 7pm to midnight until the conclusion of the festivities.

00:28This year marks the 26th edition of Miao Hui, themed Penang Lang Let's Celebrate.

00:33The event is expected to draw a crowd of about 200,000,

00:37offering locals and visitors an opportunity to revel in the festive spirit.

00:47Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yau, who officiated the lighting ceremony on Wednesday,

00:51highlighted that the event remains true in its mission to promote and preserve Penang's rich cultural heritage.

00:57Miao Hui will showcase the traditions of Penang's Chinese community

01:01through captivating performances such as lion dances, Chinese opera and cultural demonstrations,

01:07including calligraphy, paper cutting and tea ceremonies.

01:11Visitors can also immerse themselves in vibrant street parades,

01:15sample traditional delicacies at food stalls and participate in interactive activities,

01:20making the celebration a highlight of Penang's cultural calendar.
