00:00Why did black people buy into it? And second question is do you think the

00:05Black Lives Matter movement failed in protecting you?

00:08I think black people bought into it because the right-wing messaging went

00:17viral and you know folks like the Shade Room picked it up and then like you know

00:24that's like a lot of people didn't know about it until like the Shade Room

00:27picked it up the first time and you know I've had a lot of our people they

00:29know yeah exactly and I've had my conversations with folks at the Shade

00:33Room about that you know and I think and then they did a whole retraction and

00:37they they they came through from for for the situation you know once they heard

00:43more about it I think at the end of the day the virility of social media is hard

00:49to contain and once a certain message has gone out there because it could have

00:54been a totally different messaging which is like BLM co-founder invests in

00:58homes that she that supports her family and that's what black people do and like

01:03black people would have seen it differently but the fact that the first

01:06messaging was you know she has all these homes and she went on a shopping spree I

01:11mean at the height of it Jason the New York Post had me on the cover they put I

01:17was like I remember waking up you know the dirt thing came out maybe was a

01:22Thursday then that next day it was kind of quiet but then by Saturday I was on

01:29the cover of the New York Post like physical copies and I was like how the

01:34how do they do that that what is going on like what's happening and that's when

01:39I started to realize like oh I'm a target now like they are actually you

01:44know what people don't know is these groups have think tanks they start to

01:49message they start to see like okay who's the most popular person who is

01:53who's the easiest who's the most vulnerable I was the most vulnerable

01:58there were so many gaps and my and and you know just things I'm not operating

02:04like I'm a celebrity I'm operating like I'm a community organizer so I'm not

02:07thinking about certain things that need to be protected and and so that and I

02:13think you know the question around did the Black Lives Matter movement fail to

02:18protect me I don't know I don't I don't want to place blame I think that's too

02:22harsh I just don't think we know how to protect each other I don't think we have

02:28enough wherewithal and infrastructure to differentiate what is generative

02:36critique and how we hold someone accountable without throwing them under

02:43the bus or without them you know in my situation like not being able to get the

02:49protection that I needed there's a lot of things I wish happened but how do we

02:53say you created the Black Lives Matter movement and then when mainstream goes

03:00on a lynching campaign the Black Lives Matter don't show up to say that your

03:05Black Lives Matters and you not be angry Melina Abdullah has been the biggest

03:11supporter of me like she has shown up from the beginning and so there have

03:16been individual people who have been very present and very protective of me

03:21but our movement infrastructure does not have the capacity to protect black women

03:30right now we just don't it's not a judgment my hope like I said earlier

03:35about you know this moment my hope is that this is a learning moment there's

03:40this my hope is that we this won't happen again and we will protect each

03:44other
