00:00In her desire to help her parents, Janet pretended to lie to her father

00:06by saying that she would only be admitted in Tacloban.

00:09But her father went to Manila and often accompanied her.

00:15But that was not the only thing that Janet hid from her parents.

00:19She also hid the fact that she almost drowned in the tragic sinking of MV Doña Paz.

00:26Until time passed, the secret was hidden and the family never met again.

00:34The whole country was shocked by the sinking of MV Doña Paz on December 20, 1987.

00:41This was one of the biggest sea tragedies in Asia.

00:45More than 4,000 lives were lost in the collision of Doña Paz and MT Vector.

00:52Only 26 people were saved from the collision.

00:58But after more than two decades,

01:02a voice was not heard, a story was not told.

01:07There was a life that was completely changed by the tragedy.

01:12I am Valeriana Duma, 39 years old.

01:17I am one of the survivors of Doña Paz.

01:21Valeriana was one of the 14 survivors of the sinking of Doña Paz.

01:27She changed her name to Valeriana and instead used the name Janet.

01:34Her survival was not documented,

01:37so she was not included in the 26 survivors of the tragedy.

01:43She was the youngest survivor here.

01:48At present, she is taking care of a family here in San Miguel, Mexico, Pampanga.

01:55She is kind, understanding, hardworking, shy, and helpful.

02:10While Janet is in another house,

02:12Edgar, Janet's husband, works as a laborer.

02:17But no matter how tired he is, his income is not enough.

02:27Here in Barangay Cabuña, in the province of Northern Samar,

02:30Janet's father, Valeriana, is currently living.

02:34Valeriana used to say that her place is her home.

02:39She gave birth to me.

02:43I gave birth to her.

02:48The 67-year-old, Mang Jesus, was old and poor.

02:54Even now, Mang Jesus is thankful for our visit

02:59and for the opportunity to call upon the lost child.
