SA’s Premier congratulates fire crews after containing blazes

The state's premier has congratulated crews on their handling of the fires so far. All of which are under control. But authorities warn there could be more fires with temperatures expected to rise with windy conditions.

00:00So we are looking at a short-lived burst of heat developing over South Australia as we

00:06head into Christmas.

00:08And that's going to be ahead of a windy day on Thursday, followed by a cool change sweeping

00:12across the state.

00:13So that is elevating the fire danger rating throughout the state for Christmas Day, with

00:20many districts into the higher category, and a preliminary rating of extreme for both the

00:24Mount Lofty Ranges and the West Coast District.

00:29In terms of heat, we are expecting most centres in the high 30s for Christmas Day, and even

00:35nudging 40 degrees for parts of the south.

00:38So very hot conditions for Christmas, so if you're planning to celebrate outdoors, just

00:42be sure to seek some shade and drink plenty of water.

00:46For Adelaide, we're forecasting a top of 37 degrees, so this is going to make it the hottest

00:51Christmas Day since 2016, although we did have some similar heat around the mid-30s

00:56for 2018 and 2019.

01:00And those hot conditions make for a big contrast from last year when we only had a max of 20

01:04degrees in the city, and even some showers around.

01:10For Thursday, we are looking at that strong, cool change sweeping across the state.

01:15Recent modelling has continued to speed up the timing of that change, so it was looking

01:20much slower earlier in the week, which looked like a very hot day even throughout Adelaide,

01:26but with the faster timing of that change and also some extra cloud cover coming in

01:30ahead of the change, we're now looking at reduced fire conditions broadly, but still

01:36elevated through eastern parts of the state.
