00:01And as promised, we're still going to talk about something shiny.

00:05Jane, do you use real gold in your costumes?

00:10If I have a gold jewelry, I'll take care of it because I know that gold is expensive.

00:15Hmm.

00:16But why is gold expensive?

00:18To that question, here's the golden answer.

00:22A lot of people are crazy about diamonds.

00:25But this is the reason why a lot of people went crazy about the California Gold Rush in 1849 in America.

00:33In March 1848, there were only 157,000 residents in the new territory of California.

00:41In just 7 years, more than 300,000 people came.

00:45Because of the sudden increase in people and wealth, California became a state.

00:52San Francisco also became a prosperous city.

00:55At the present time, the name of their professional football team, the San Francisco 49ers,

01:00is a tribute to the 1849 California Gold Rush.

01:06The Gold Rush was active in 1852 until the discovery of silver in Nevada in 1859.

01:14Within a decade, $80 million in gold was mined in California.

01:20But almost none of the miners became rich.

01:22The traders are so rich.

01:24Their goods are so expensive.

01:26If we convert it to money today, the price of an egg is almost 1,500 pesos.

01:33And almost 6,000 pesos is half a kilo of coffee.

01:37Wow!

01:38John Studebaker also became rich all of a sudden.

01:41He became famous because of his cars.

01:44But he sold his wheelbarrows to the miners first.

01:48Henry Wells and William Fargo of Wells Fargo Bank also became rich.

01:53Who else became rich because of the miners of the Gold Rush?

01:56One of them is Taylor Osastre, who was born in Germany.

02:00At first, he planned to sell canvas tarpaulins and wheelbarrows.
