Corbyn: London ‘losing its character due to vanity project’ skyscrapers

00:00The people that come and talk to me the most are in deep housing stress,

00:06particularly rough sleeping homeless, which is going up,

00:10but also really bad levels of overcrowding in council and housing association property,

00:17which leads to underachievement by their children in schools

00:20because there's simply no space to do homework and study.

00:23So we've got to make a priority on social housing.

00:28We need a city that works for everybody.

00:32The housing crisis is at its most acute.

00:35I think the GLA understand that.

00:38I think they need the resources to develop the council housing

00:41and the planning powers to develop the council housing.

00:44I am concerned that some of the planning decisions are being made.

00:49We're becoming a city that, particularly in central London and the City of London,

00:55is losing its character completely by the new competition of vanity projects,

01:01of an even higher high-rise office block than the next one.

01:05That's not what London's about.

01:07London is about its open spaces, its character, its history.

01:12I want to retain that and at the same time improve social housing.

01:16Social housing can be in converted street properties as well.

01:19It doesn't all have to be to high-rise blocks.
