00:04Look, I think that Dak Prescott, the Cowboys are going to suffer for a long time because

00:09they paid him a number that now, in many ways, takes from the ability to build teams to go

00:14help you for the very thing that you need.

00:16And so that's the dilemma because, I mean, we love, everyone loves Brock and loves his

00:21game and loves his efficiency and his leadership and everything else, but we got to make sure

00:26we have the money to put the people with him to go win it.

00:30Because if the goal is Super Bowls, if the goal is winning some rank and file regular

00:34season games, maybe get to the playoffs, that's a different goal.

00:38And that might mean different.

00:39But if you're talking about, we want to go to the Super Bowl, we need people to be there

00:43to help Brock.

00:45And if he doesn't, and so that it becomes just how much is there available and is a

00:48zero sum game in some ways with a salary cap.

00:51OK, I love this because to me, some of us might be having the wrong conversation with

00:55regard to Brock Purdy.

00:57I don't think that the conversation should be about average annual value, like 55 or

01:0360.

01:04I don't think it's that.

01:05And I also don't think the conversation should really be centered around, do you want Brock

01:10as your future QB?

01:12Because the 49ers answer is yes, they want Brock Purdy.

01:16The word that we should be discussing is structure.

01:19Yeah, exactly.

01:20That's what needs to be discussed.

01:22The structure of this deal.

01:24Yes, the Niners want him.

01:25And in my opinion, yes, they should.

01:28But the structure of the deal and its allowance for the 49ers to maneuver at other positions

01:35is what I think is the responsibility of both their front office and Brock and his agent

01:41to understand.

01:42And I think that's what Steve is saying.

01:44Right.

01:45The structure is everything.

01:46And you look at contracts that are already signed in the NFL and the structure of them,

01:51Deshaun Watson's contract, fully guaranteed, that structure was a disaster when he signed

01:56it.

01:57And it was only made worse by the fact that he actually went out and played football.

02:00Kyler Murray's contract structure was a disaster.

02:04It's been offset a little bit this year by the fact that he's played better, but they

02:07still are saddled with that contract.

02:10The Kirk Cousins contract structure, not as long, not as expensive, but that contract

02:17is going to hurt them.

02:18He's not going to play for them again.

02:20And there's going to be a dead cat that they're going to have to carry.

02:23Probably that structure is a bad one.

02:26We all talk about Daniel Jones and what a joke it was to give him four and one sixty.

02:30But the structure of that was such that it was a two year experiment and they were able

02:35to get out of it relatively pain free.

02:37So you look at Brock Purdy and you want to give him five years and you want to give him

02:42enough money to where he's made whole.

02:45But you want to structure it so that the majority of the money comes in the first two

02:49years and the majority of the money is in a signing bonus that can be prorated over

02:54the life of the deal.

02:56So even if it is fifty five million a year over five, which is five and two sixty five,

03:02if the signing bonus is, let's just call it 90, which would be 16 million a year, that

03:07can get offset and spread out so that you could pay him a ton of money in the first

03:12three years.

03:14And then if he's not working out, you can get out of the deal and all of a sudden it's

03:17not a two hundred and sixty five million dollar deal.

03:20I just think flexibility and maneuverability, it's like the 49ers have.

03:24They should sign Brock Purdy to an extension.

03:27He should want to stay.

03:28He should want maneuverability and flexibility the same way Tom Brady did.

03:35He should want not just money, but he should want to win.

03:39He should want that.

03:40And there I believe there is a way for everybody's back to get scratched.

03:45I really do.

03:46Let's take some calls on on the Niners, Big D in the city on Willard and Dibbs.

04:17And right then and there is when Mr. Williams started to gash.

04:20So you know what?

04:21We've been exposed on that part.

04:23And Brock was off.

04:24I admit Brock was off that day, but, you know, still pay him, but try to get a prenup on

04:28him.

04:29What happens if his shoulder messes up again?

04:30Then what?

04:31Well, and and Big D, I think the the prenup in NFL terms, thanks Big D, is exactly what

04:38Dibbs and I were just talking about.

04:39Yeah, exactly.

04:40It's just it's just about how long until you can get out of it.

04:45And that's why Deshaun Watson, for example, is such a horrible, horrible contract and

04:49bad idea, because there's just there's no maneuverability and and flexibility.

04:54And this is a moving goalpost for every single contract that's out there.

04:59I have no problem with Brock getting a big number average annual value, and it'll look

05:04good on the Internet and everyone will go, oh, my God, they gave him fifty eight.

05:09But it doesn't actually need to be that it the way to keep it maneuverable and flexible

05:15is, as you just said, to make sure that there is an out within two or three years that allows

05:21the Niners to move and make sure that it is structured in those first three years to where

05:26they can still sign other players.

05:29And they can do that.

05:30Right.

05:31That can be achieved.

05:32And they will do it that way because they have cash on hand, as David Lombardi has said

05:35to us every time we've talked about restructures.

05:38I'm looking at the Trevor Lawrence contract, which was five and two seventy five.

05:42The guarantee was one hundred and forty two at signing, but they did it the opposite way

05:46where that contract gets bigger and bigger and bigger.

05:50And the cap hit is seventeen and twenty four, then thirty five, then forty seven.

05:55And then they do have some dead years that he's never going to see.

05:59His base is fifty million in twenty twenty nine and fifty three million the year after

06:04that.

06:05Those years are never going to be seen.

06:06But until then, the ability to get out is difficult because that number keeps getting

06:11bigger and bigger.

06:12If you do it the other way, if you give Brock a lot early after a couple of years like Daniel

06:17Jones, then you can say, well, this is not working out.

06:20And here comes Cooper Manning's kid.

06:23Maybe we want to, you know, poop for coop.

07:02So, you know, get me some O-line, man, because that's the only way we don't get back to the

07:07run game.

07:08You got an O-line, you can't hold the camera.

07:14I agree completely, although I know again, I understand there's no way to get out of

07:20our conversation constantly falling into the average annual value.

07:24It's not really what matters.

07:25They can address the O-line and give Brock 55.

07:28They can.

07:29It's all about structure.

07:30But conceptually, what you're saying, Mike, I couldn't agree more.

07:34That's not only true for Brock and the 49ers.

07:36It's true for checks, notes, all football teams.

07:40To me, if I like, I know people love quarterbacks, edge rushers, cornerbacks, and now seemingly

07:48wide receivers and left tackles.

07:50Those are the positions everybody cares about, but I'm going to take it beyond left tackle.

07:55That collectively, I just think if you've got a great offensive line, you've got a good

08:00football team, period, period.

08:03And you heard Greg talk about it is one of the major reasons why Sam Darnold is playing

08:08so well.

08:09Do you hear the first word he used?

08:10He goes, he's very comfortable.

08:12Right.

08:13Well, what makes a quarterback comfortable?

08:15Time and space.

08:17And I do think what Greg was saying is spot on when it comes to not only Brock Purdy,

08:21but the Shanahan offenses.

08:23It's really predicated on being able to run the ball.

08:25If you can't run the ball, all the play action doesn't work as well.

08:29All the pre-snap hullabaloo doesn't work as well.

08:32And if you don't protect Brock Purdy, he's not the kind of quarterback who can sit back

08:36there and do it on his own like a Josh Allen or a Patrick Mahomes.
