Take a listen to this, Dan Patrick's show, Steve Young.
00:04
Look, I think that Dak Prescott, the Cowboys are going to suffer for a long time because
00:09
they paid him a number that now, in many ways, takes from the ability to build teams to go
00:14
help you for the very thing that you need.
00:16
And so that's the dilemma because, I mean, we love, everyone loves Brock and loves his
00:21
game and loves his efficiency and his leadership and everything else, but we got to make sure
00:26
we have the money to put the people with him to go win it.
00:30
Because if the goal is Super Bowls, if the goal is winning some rank and file regular
00:34
season games, maybe get to the playoffs, that's a different goal.
00:38
And that might mean different.
00:39
But if you're talking about, we want to go to the Super Bowl, we need people to be there
00:43
to help Brock.
00:45
And if he doesn't, and so that it becomes just how much is there available and is a
00:48
zero sum game in some ways with a salary cap.
00:51
OK, I love this because to me, some of us might be having the wrong conversation with
00:55
regard to Brock Purdy.
00:57
I don't think that the conversation should be about average annual value, like 55 or
01:03
60.
01:04
I don't think it's that.
01:05
And I also don't think the conversation should really be centered around, do you want Brock
01:10
as your future QB?
01:12
Because the 49ers answer is yes, they want Brock Purdy.
01:16
The word that we should be discussing is structure.
01:19
Yeah, exactly.
01:20
That's what needs to be discussed.
01:22
The structure of this deal.
01:24
Yes, the Niners want him.
01:25
And in my opinion, yes, they should.
01:28
But the structure of the deal and its allowance for the 49ers to maneuver at other positions
01:35
is what I think is the responsibility of both their front office and Brock and his agent
01:41
to understand.
01:42
And I think that's what Steve is saying.
01:44
Right.
01:45
The structure is everything.
01:46
And you look at contracts that are already signed in the NFL and the structure of them,
01:51
Deshaun Watson's contract, fully guaranteed, that structure was a disaster when he signed
01:56
it.
01:57
And it was only made worse by the fact that he actually went out and played football.
02:00
Kyler Murray's contract structure was a disaster.
02:04
It's been offset a little bit this year by the fact that he's played better, but they
02:07
still are saddled with that contract.
02:10
The Kirk Cousins contract structure, not as long, not as expensive, but that contract
02:17
is going to hurt them.
02:18
He's not going to play for them again.
02:20
And there's going to be a dead cat that they're going to have to carry.
02:23
Probably that structure is a bad one.
02:26
We all talk about Daniel Jones and what a joke it was to give him four and one sixty.
02:30
But the structure of that was such that it was a two year experiment and they were able
02:35
to get out of it relatively pain free.
02:37
So you look at Brock Purdy and you want to give him five years and you want to give him
02:42
enough money to where he's made whole.
02:45
But you want to structure it so that the majority of the money comes in the first two
02:49
years and the majority of the money is in a signing bonus that can be prorated over
02:54
the life of the deal.
02:56
So even if it is fifty five million a year over five, which is five and two sixty five,
03:02
if the signing bonus is, let's just call it 90, which would be 16 million a year, that
03:07
can get offset and spread out so that you could pay him a ton of money in the first
03:12
three years.
03:14
And then if he's not working out, you can get out of the deal and all of a sudden it's
03:17
not a two hundred and sixty five million dollar deal.
03:20
I just think flexibility and maneuverability, it's like the 49ers have.
03:24
They should sign Brock Purdy to an extension.
03:27
He should want to stay.
03:28
He should want maneuverability and flexibility the same way Tom Brady did.
03:35
He should want not just money, but he should want to win.
03:39
He should want that.
03:40
And there I believe there is a way for everybody's back to get scratched.
03:45
I really do.
03:46
Let's take some calls on on the Niners, Big D in the city on Willard and Dibbs.
03:49
Hey, Big D, what's up?
03:50
Hey, how you guys doing, man?
03:51
I'd like to hear you guys again.
03:52
If I don't talk to you after that, Merry Christmas and everything else.
03:57
To you as well.
03:58
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:59
You know, I watched that game and, you know, you guys hit a lot of points.
04:03
Even Mr. Cosell did about the speed on the outside.
04:06
We're missing.
04:07
You know, what time was it when Drake Greenlaw went out of that game?
04:11
It felt like it was somewhere in the neighborhood at halftime.
04:14
Yeah, yeah.
04:15
Just past halftime.
04:16
Yeah.
04:17
And right then and there is when Mr. Williams started to gash.
04:20
So you know what?
04:21
We've been exposed on that part.
04:23
And Brock was off.
04:24
I admit Brock was off that day, but, you know, still pay him, but try to get a prenup on
04:28
him.
04:29
What happens if his shoulder messes up again?
04:30
Then what?
04:31
Well, and and Big D, I think the the prenup in NFL terms, thanks Big D, is exactly what
04:38
Dibbs and I were just talking about.
04:39
Yeah, exactly.
04:40
It's just it's just about how long until you can get out of it.
04:45
And that's why Deshaun Watson, for example, is such a horrible, horrible contract and
04:49
bad idea, because there's just there's no maneuverability and and flexibility.
04:54
And this is a moving goalpost for every single contract that's out there.
04:59
I have no problem with Brock getting a big number average annual value, and it'll look
05:04
good on the Internet and everyone will go, oh, my God, they gave him fifty eight.
05:09
But it doesn't actually need to be that it the way to keep it maneuverable and flexible
05:15
is, as you just said, to make sure that there is an out within two or three years that allows
05:21
the Niners to move and make sure that it is structured in those first three years to where
05:26
they can still sign other players.
05:29
And they can do that.
05:30
Right.
05:31
That can be achieved.
05:32
And they will do it that way because they have cash on hand, as David Lombardi has said
05:35
to us every time we've talked about restructures.
05:38
I'm looking at the Trevor Lawrence contract, which was five and two seventy five.
05:42
The guarantee was one hundred and forty two at signing, but they did it the opposite way
05:46
where that contract gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
05:50
And the cap hit is seventeen and twenty four, then thirty five, then forty seven.
05:55
And then they do have some dead years that he's never going to see.
05:59
His base is fifty million in twenty twenty nine and fifty three million the year after
06:04
that.
06:05
Those years are never going to be seen.
06:06
But until then, the ability to get out is difficult because that number keeps getting
06:11
bigger and bigger.
06:12
If you do it the other way, if you give Brock a lot early after a couple of years like Daniel
06:17
Jones, then you can say, well, this is not working out.
06:20
And here comes Cooper Manning's kid.
06:23
Maybe we want to, you know, poop for coop.
06:25
Who knows?
06:26
Who knows?
06:27
You got to keep that flexibility.
06:29
Mike and Mike and Emeryville next up.
06:31
Hi, Mike.
06:32
Thanks.
06:33
How you guys doing there?
06:34
What's Mike?
06:35
Yeah.
06:36
Yeah.
06:37
I just want to say I listen to you guys every day, man.
06:38
And but all I want to say is they need to stop party bashing, bro.
06:46
They really, really need to stop party bashing.
06:48
What they need to do in order to get back to minor football is get a whole lot.
06:53
You know, if they can get part of it, like, like, say, 45 and try to convince them, like,
07:00
you want to stay on your feet, don't you?
07:02
So, you know, get me some O-line, man, because that's the only way we don't get back to the
07:07
run game.
07:08
You got an O-line, you can't hold the camera.
07:11
Mike, I like, yeah, I agree.
07:14
I agree completely, although I know again, I understand there's no way to get out of
07:20
our conversation constantly falling into the average annual value.
07:24
It's not really what matters.
07:25
They can address the O-line and give Brock 55.
07:28
They can.
07:29
It's all about structure.
07:30
But conceptually, what you're saying, Mike, I couldn't agree more.
07:34
That's not only true for Brock and the 49ers.
07:36
It's true for checks, notes, all football teams.
07:40
To me, if I like, I know people love quarterbacks, edge rushers, cornerbacks, and now seemingly
07:48
wide receivers and left tackles.
07:50
Those are the positions everybody cares about, but I'm going to take it beyond left tackle.
07:55
That collectively, I just think if you've got a great offensive line, you've got a good
08:00
football team, period, period.
08:03
And you heard Greg talk about it is one of the major reasons why Sam Darnold is playing
08:08
so well.
08:09
Do you hear the first word he used?
08:10
He goes, he's very comfortable.
08:12
Right.
08:13
Well, what makes a quarterback comfortable?
08:15
Time and space.
08:17
And I do think what Greg was saying is spot on when it comes to not only Brock Purdy,
08:21
but the Shanahan offenses.
08:23
It's really predicated on being able to run the ball.
08:25
If you can't run the ball, all the play action doesn't work as well.
08:29
All the pre-snap hullabaloo doesn't work as well.
08:32
And if you don't protect Brock Purdy, he's not the kind of quarterback who can sit back
08:36
there and do it on his own like a Josh Allen or a Patrick Mahomes.
