00:00He is known as one of the leading classical guitarists in the Philippines now.
00:04He has won in various guitar competitions and has performed in numerous concerts around the Philippines and abroad.
00:13And now, he has released his book with the title, Play Filipino.
00:17He is none other than the classical guitarist, Moncheng Carpio.
00:21Good morning. Welcome here in Rise and Shine Philippines, Moncheng.
00:25Good morning.
00:26Good morning.
00:27Thank you for having me.
00:29Alright, before anything else, can you explain to us about this book, Play Filipino, and what is it about, Moncheng?
00:40Play Filipino is a collection of Filipino folk songs that I arranged for classical guitar.
00:48So, it's about the folk songs that we grew up listening to.
00:52I arranged it in a way that it's not the same as the original, so it's a bit deconstructed.
00:57So, it's a wordplay of Play Filipino, encouraging people to play more Filipino music,
01:04and at the same time, I played the folk songs.
01:10And Moncheng, how did you choose the songs that you will include in the book?
01:14And how long did it take you to make it?
01:17I noticed that in the book's screenshots, there are notes, so there are chords that our musicians can follow, right?
01:25It's a standard music notation, but I put a templature because not all notes are readable.
01:33So, it's just to make it accessible to everyone.
01:36And then, I chose the folk songs based on the ones that are familiar to me,
01:42because it's hard to arrange if you don't know what you're doing.
01:45So, it's like, mostly folk songs from Luzon, then a bit from Visayas,
01:51and then one piece from Mindanao, because it's hard to find pieces that are available online.
01:58And then, I made it during the pandemic, so it's four years in the making.
02:03So, during the lockdown, we couldn't do anything, we were stuck in our homes.
02:08So, I took the time to be creative, and also so that I wouldn't go crazy because we were all in lockdown.
02:14So, we had to do something to get our brains working.
02:18So, it took four years because of the procrastination.
02:24So, this year, I decided that I needed to release it.
02:30At least, you were very productive during the pandemic time, and you were able to produce this book.
02:36But other than that, can you tell us about your process in arranging these folk songs nationwide,
02:45from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao?
02:48Can you tell us about your process?
02:54I think it all started when I was visiting my mom,
03:00and I was commuting by train, and then I tried to sing the folk songs because there was a commute,
03:06so it took a lot of time.
03:09And then, instead of the usual form,
03:14for example, Leron, Leron, Sinta, instead of singing Leron, Leron, Sinta,
03:18what I did was I made the melody more fun, so it became Leron, Leron, Sinta,
03:23and then I changed the chord progression, harmony, and the form.
03:29So, it's not the typical folk songs anymore,
03:33so the approach became more popular,
03:37so it can be related to more people.
03:40In a way, Meiji, if you think about what Moncheng is doing,
03:42he's preserving our folk songs more,
03:45because there's a new rendition, is that what you call it?
03:48Or a new version?
03:49Yes, a new arrangement.
03:51Moncheng, aside from your book, you also have a new album release.
03:54Can you tell us more about it?
03:56Yes.
03:57Last September and October, I released Philippine Music for Classical Guitar.
04:02It's an original composition by Jose Valdez.
04:06He's one of the pioneers of classical guitar here in the Philippines.
04:10It's a 13-track composition,
04:12and I recorded it using historic guitars from the GTY collection,
04:18which are collectors' item guitars as old as 1883.
04:23So, 13 tracks and 13 guitars, so one guitar per track.
04:28It's available on streaming platforms.
04:32It can be streamed.
04:34Yes, I was curious to hear the different arrangements of your folk songs.
04:46Aside from Rondo Rondo and Sinta Moncheng,
04:48what other songs do you know?
04:50Yes, you also have a new arrangement.
04:54I have Paruparang Bukid, Sinsirit Si, May Lobo,
04:58so all of the folk songs that we grew up listening to.
05:01I also listen to it because it's nostalgic.
05:05It connects me to my childhood.
05:10Now, I'm presenting it in a different light
05:13so that it won't be boring.
05:15That's true.
05:16You mentioned Moncheng that you have collections of guitars.
05:23Why did you choose classical music?
05:27How did it start?
05:30When I was in high school, my dream was to become a rock star
05:34because I used to play in a band, so I used an electric guitar.
05:38Then, I had a friend who encouraged me to go to a conservatory.
05:42So, I tried it.
05:44It was like a culture shock because it was a no-treating class.
05:50But during that time, I had no idea that there was a conservatory
05:53or classical music.
05:55For us Filipinos, listening to classical music is not innate.
06:00Growing up, I had no idea.
06:02So, when I enrolled in UP, it was like a golden opportunity.
06:07When I experienced classical music, I realized that it's beautiful.
06:11So, you enjoyed it.
06:14I think if you're a musician, no matter what genre you're in,
06:18it's innate to be a musician.
06:21Moncheng, do you have any upcoming events?
06:24Go ahead, sorry.
06:26We all have talents, but in classical music,
06:32once you take classical training,
06:35the skills are easier to go to any genre
06:39because you're equipped with the technique.
06:41So, it's easier for you to adapt.
06:43So, even for my students, I don't force them to take classical music
06:48because they have different tastes.
06:50But at least, wherever they go, they're equipped with the technique.
06:54It's important to have an understanding of the music you make.
06:56The foundation is also important.
06:58Moncheng, I was saying earlier,
07:00do you have any upcoming events
07:02that you want to invite our RSP
07:04or social media pages
07:06that you want to share?
07:08Yes, you know, I'm excited
07:10because you have a book.
07:12So, I'm also excited
07:14if you'll have a concert.
07:16No, right?
07:18Because, of course, it's better live.
07:20Actually, I launched it
07:22three weeks ago
07:24at the Uchengdo Museum.
07:26So, I performed
07:28all the tracks
07:30in the book,
07:32live.
07:34It also has videos,
07:36so I posted it on my social media pages.
07:38And speaking of that,
07:40now in December,
07:42we don't have many events
07:44because we're on vacation.
07:46So, for next year,
07:48we have a lot of lineup events.
07:50But for those who are updated,
07:52they can find me
07:54online, on Facebook,
07:56YouTube, Instagram.
07:58So, just search for Moncheng Carpio.
08:00And also, I have a guitar quartet
08:02group.
08:04So, there are four of us guitarists.
08:06We play classical music.
08:08The theme is guitar quartet.
08:10So, follow our pages.
08:12Moncheng, I'm also curious
08:14since you gave a new life,
08:16a new arrangement, these folk songs
08:18that we already know.
08:20Do you also work with
08:22organizations?
08:24I mean,
08:26with music, OPM?
08:28So, you can
08:30spread
08:32the new rendition
08:34of songs.
08:36Actually, I have a lot of solo
08:38guitar covers of OPM songs.
08:40Because
08:42this is the way to bridge
08:44the gap between
08:46music people
08:48and those who are not familiar
08:50with classical music.
08:52So, this is the way
08:54to get their attention.
08:56At the same time,
08:58hopefully,
09:00they will appreciate
09:02Serious Classical Guitar Music.
09:04It's just a skill
09:06for more people to appreciate
09:08our instrument.
09:10Thank you so much, Moncheng Carpio,
09:12for joining us this morning.
09:14Good luck with your book and
09:16upcoming events.
09:18Thank you, Moncheng.
