00:00Okay, let's rock
00:05Classic albums featuring Metallica. I
00:09Guess it was called Metallica, but I was called the black album. There's no real theme to this one
00:14It was simple black cover and you had to listen to the music. You wouldn't be distracted by a drawing
00:20This was not just a great heavy metal record. It was a great rock record
00:25all the songs are
00:28From day one. We're usually based around a riff you get a good riff
00:32that's that that's pretty much the meat of the song and you're kind of adding things on to it as you go along and
00:40Riff is the spine of the whole song the first song that we
00:44Tackled was this great riff that Kirk Hammett had come up with
00:49Which basically was this thing that became in our Sandman. It's an amazing lick, you know, it was great
00:55Classic rock, but it had like a futurist quality to it and it became much more about
01:01Taking what we were doing into another place that we'd never been before
01:07This is my riff your first trip you ever wrote yeah the first riff I ever wrote
01:13That's good. I wrote it
01:16Like three o'clock in the morning
01:19I
01:21Was all fired up I said to myself, all right a really heavy riff that's heavier than anything
01:28No, I didn't say that. I
01:30Never really had the the big picture of this album that I think Lars did I just knew it was a bunch of good songs
01:36There were a lot of planets aligning
01:38It was the right songs with the right new producer with the right new attitude with the right timing and you know
01:45What's amazing is that it keeps on going to this day the Black Elm sells copies
01:50It's our dark side of the moon watch the full episode of classic albums with Metallica
