Moments ago, news breaking on Twitter, that Bill Belichick has interviewed for a head
00:08
coaching job.
00:10
Not with the NFL, no, no, no.
00:14
Not the Saints?
00:15
Not with the Saints?
00:16
Jets?
00:17
Or?
00:18
Not the Jets.
00:19
Whoever the hell else is available.
00:20
Chicago?
00:21
Yeah, the Bears, Bears.
00:22
Jaguars.
00:23
Jaguars.
00:24
Well, the Jaguars.
00:25
They still have a coach.
00:26
Poor Doug Peterson's body's not cold yet.
00:27
They haven't fired him yet.
00:28
But there are some teams that are looking.
00:29
Now they have interim head coaches, and they're looking for a solution there.
00:34
Belichick is not interviewing with any of them.
00:35
He is interviewing with the University of North Carolina.
00:38
Ooh, Tar Heels, baby.
00:40
This now, it was an early report.
00:42
It's now all over the place.
00:44
As Inside Carolina, who I'm not familiar with, it looks like a 24-7, you know, 24-7 sports.
00:50
It's one of their North Carolina blogs.
00:52
But here it is.
00:53
Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick interviewed for the head coaching vacancy
00:56
at North Carolina this week.
00:58
He's among a group of candidates that Tar Heels have spoken with since firing Mack Brown
01:02
back on November 26th.
01:03
That is a list that includes Tulane head coach John Summerall, Georgia defensive coordinator
01:08
Glenn Schumann, among others.
01:10
The initial report, Sunday, the initial contact between Belichick and UNC officials.
01:15
That when it first came out.
01:16
Adam Schefter reported in September that Belichick was eyeing a return to coaching in 2025, but
01:21
is expected to be choosy if and when he returns to the sideline.
01:25
Schefter reported that Belichick turned down offers from the Niners and Rams to fill the
01:28
defensive coordinator vacancies in a decorated assistant role.
01:32
The report from Inside Carolina is the first official known interest between Belichick
01:36
and a college football program.
01:39
Now, I don't know exactly how it works when there's an NFL team that's fired their head
01:45
coach, what the interview process is like, how that kind of goes in season, if they've
01:48
named an interim coach.
01:50
If they have to be sneaky about it, I don't know.
01:51
I don't know the rules there.
01:53
And I maybe should have looked into that before I started talking about it.
01:56
But I will say this, for him to be interviewing with college teams implies to me that he may
02:04
not think there's a whole ton of interest in the NFL with any of these teams.
02:08
That's sort of what that signals to me, unless he plans on taking a million interviews or
02:12
any interview that he gets, which for all intents and purposes, I mean, that may be
02:16
something that he's going to do anyway.
02:18
But I don't necessarily consider this like Chip Kelly going to UCLA and then springboarding
02:25
that back into the NFL.
02:26
You know, like he's 72 years old.
02:28
You're not you're not going stepping stone jobs here.
02:30
I think that if he knew he had something lined up or if he had a good idea about something
02:34
lined up in the NFL, why would he even bother taking this interview?
02:37
Yeah, I don't get this at all.
02:38
It's weird, right?
02:39
No sense to me.
02:40
You're not breaking the record.
02:41
UNC knew snarkily.
02:42
It's like a UNC wanted to get younger on the sidelines one year younger than Mac Brown.
02:48
I don't.
02:49
And I've seen people because sometimes these the speculation on weird interviews is like,
02:54
oh, it's just the interview.
02:55
He wants to, like, brush up on his interviewing skills.
02:57
But I don't even can't even imagine that in this landscape of NIL and all that crap that
03:03
a college interview is anything like the NFL.
03:07
Right.
03:08
Right.
03:09
Like, I don't need recruiting.
03:10
And everything that goes into it is just so foreign to him, first of all, who's never
03:14
coached in college.
03:16
He was supposed to coach in college before he started his NFL career, and he didn't.
03:19
He turned the job down.
03:20
I think he was supposed to be an assistant for maybe a Lou Holtz tie in or something.
03:24
But he ended up going to the Colts and obviously a pro career did quite well after that.
03:28
Yeah, he did.
03:29
OK.
03:30
I don't.
03:31
I don't know what he would get.
03:32
I just Googled Bubba Cunningham is the athletic director.
03:36
I wanted to see if there was some.
03:38
Did he go to school with Bill?
03:39
Is there some like tie in there?
03:41
You love an athletic director named Bubba, don't you?
03:43
Well, I mean, his first name is Lawrence.
03:44
Just because I don't know.
03:46
OK, but it does say at the top of his page, though, Bubba Cunningham.
03:50
I don't see an obvious tie in there to Bill or that would make sense.
03:55
I can't.
03:56
I even asked you during the break, you said Belichick's interviewing in North Carolina.
04:00
I go, Bill.
04:01
Yeah, because Steve, I mean, it's only one year, but he's a defensive coordinator in
04:05
college.
04:06
He has pro background.
04:07
I don't think it would be the craziest thing to say Steve Belichick was interviewing in
04:10
North Carolina.
04:11
I think that's much less crazy than Bill Belichick.
04:14
Right.
04:15
Because most people think the only reason Bill wants to coach is to get the wins.
04:18
I heard Bill O'Brien say it this morning on the Greg Hill Show.
04:21
He's 14 wins away or whatever.
04:22
Now, Bill O'Brien puts more stock in that record than I do because I don't think anybody
04:26
on the planet knows who the all time wins leader really is and what the number is and
04:30
all of that crap.
04:32
I can't.
04:34
Can you formulate a logical explanation as to why this makes sense for either side?
04:39
Yes.
04:40
Here's my here's my explanation.
04:41
Bill Belichick decided, you know what?
04:43
I really like the idea of 18 to 23 year olds getting paid millions of dollars.
04:48
And I want to be a part of that.
04:49
I want to coach these kids, these teenagers who are getting fabulously wealthy in college
04:54
and just telling the doing whatever they want all the time, driving around campus with,
04:58
you know, girls flying out of the car like that.
05:01
That's what I want.
05:02
I like that.
05:03
I want to be a part of that.
05:04
That seems like something that me, 72 year old Bill Belichick, an environment that I
05:08
thrive in.
05:09
And see, I thought I was going to give you a heart.
05:10
I thought you were going in a different direction, about 18 to 24 year olds.
05:13
Well, that too.
05:14
I thought you were going to break up something else.
05:16
I was.
05:17
I can't even think of that.
05:18
I just bet he would.
05:19
You know what I mean?
05:20
Like in the NIL era, Bill Belichick, how's that going to work?
05:23
He's going to get treated the way he treated players like he used to cut ties with players
05:26
just willy nilly.
05:27
Now the players can do it to him.
05:28
They can go there for one year, trailer in, out.
05:31
Oh, wait, you're not going to give me a million more next year.
05:33
I had five touchdowns this year.
05:35
I'm out of here.
05:36
It makes no sense to me on any level.
05:39
We did have a snarky, like, Hey, maybe his girlfriend's doing grad school there or something.
05:42
And they just want to be close.
05:44
But if you're North Carolina, what's the most, it's the same argument with the pros.
05:48
We say he might be with a team for two or three years.
05:49
Right.
05:50
What does North Carolina get out of Bill Belichick for two or three years?
05:52
Good question.
05:53
I have no idea.
05:54
I don't even, this is weird.
05:56
It is weird.
05:57
Dan, you have a theory?
05:58
To me, this came off as a, as a mediocre to subpar PR play for him and whoever's representation
06:04
is.
06:05
Oh, it's the middle of this earth.
06:06
By the end of December, before the NFL coaching cycle begins, Bill's already getting interest.
06:10
He's already getting interviews.
06:12
So when NFL teams have their vacancies, well, he's already back up for at least one job.
06:16
So why shouldn't we interview him for ours?
06:18
I'm not saying it's a good one.
06:19
I'm just saying that's how I perceive it.
06:21
And there could be some truth to that.
06:23
I think Schefter has done his best to really promote Bill Belichick.
06:26
He's going to have a bunch of jobs to pick from.
06:29
And he's on every media outlet you can find at this point, trying to give his opinion
06:33
and continue having his name in the headlines.
06:36
So the logic on that end is Bill Belichick's inner circle is concerned that there aren't
06:41
going to be jobs available, that it could be something like last year where there's
06:46
maybe one that's interested, but even they're not all in.
06:51
That is the best argument I've heard.
06:52
Like get your name out there, pretend people, you're a hot commodity, like, and now he'll
06:57
pull his name out of consideration.
06:59
That's what you do here.
07:00
Bill Belichick has removed his name from consideration for the North Carolina job in hopes of pursuing
07:04
an NFL job when the hiring cycle begins in January, which he could have just not taken
07:08
the interview to begin with.
07:09
If he really felt that way, he should go there.
07:11
Who?
07:12
Who doesn't want to go to college?
07:13
I don't think.
07:14
But my guy, Josh McDaniels, he could go to North Carolina.
07:16
You put a baby blue visor on that head, send him out recruiting.
07:19
What are you laughing at?
07:21
It's funny.
07:22
You go right to the visor.
07:23
He's a visor guy.
07:24
I know.
07:25
It's just a baby blue.
07:26
And those baby blues are nice.
07:28
That's from one visor guy to another right there.
07:30
He could sell people on coming to North Carolina.
07:33
He could massage the boosters and all that and the NIL.
07:37
He could work that game if he wanted to.
07:39
Bill Belichick, the curmudgeon, the Grinch.
07:41
It's that time of year.
07:42
Pull out there on the recruiting trail.
07:44
What are we doing?
07:45
I have no idea.
07:46
Is he going to bring in Nick Saban as his D coordinator like now that would actually
07:51
be kind of cool.
07:52
Yeah.
07:53
You know what?
07:54
You got me thinking.
07:55
I mean, the old men got together at North Carolina.
07:56
Those guys bopping around the country interviewing all the top prospects trying to get them down
07:59
to Chapel Hill.
08:00
Doesn't this kind of make sense for North Carolina to though?
08:02
Think about where we're talking about it here in Boston, that that job's open.
08:05
Maybe, maybe it reflects as a better job opening for them as well.
08:09
Maybe or flip the script.
08:12
You get people thinking about Bill Belichick and then you hire one of those people I've
08:14
never heard of that you listed as also being candidates in there.
08:17
Yeah.
08:18
And then there's disappointment.
08:19
It's good point.
08:20
I thought you guys were interviewing Bill Belichick.
08:21
Who's the D coordinator from Tulane?
08:22
I've never heard of it.
08:23
Yeah.
08:24
It's a good point.
08:25
617-779-7937 is the phone number.
08:27
Bill Walsh could be heating up here as a UNC doing a, doing an interview there.
08:32
Not in the NFL.
08:33
It'd be interesting if he finishes his career, not in the NFL.
08:38
You know that there was like a rumor might be even strong to describe it this way.
08:43
There was an undercurrent of social media speculate speculation, something that people
08:50
were trying to say UMass Amherst, like last week that UMass Amherst and Bill, like there
08:54
was some connection.
08:55
Now, obviously it didn't come to fruition.
08:56
They hired some guy I've never heard of, but, um, maybe we need to expand Bill Walsh
09:01
to the sideline with that maroon visor on that head.
09:04
Oh baby.
09:05
Oh, imagine him out there.
09:07
It'd be something.
09:08
It'd definitely be something.
