I raised the issue of cancer last week with the Cabinet Secretary
00:05
and I agreed that it was important in the performance
00:09
and said that the debate was moving from place to place.
00:13
It is therefore obvious that there is a problem in what is happening in particular.
00:17
There are two issues in my view.
00:19
One MP has come in saying that he is staying seven weeks for a mammogram,
00:24
another MP is staying for cancer treatment of the throat
00:28
and another MP is staying 24 weeks for a mammogram.
00:32
Of course, the primary diagnosis is significant,
00:35
but it is significant in order to be able to get a mammogram for the health service.
00:38
So, does the Prime Minister think that it is acceptable
00:41
that people are allowed to stay even for a mammogram
00:45
and why is there a postcode lottery among areas in Wales
00:49
for a diagnosis and a mammogram?
00:52
Well, thank you very much, Member.
00:53
Because Betsi said that it was particularly good
00:56
compared to other health boards in Wales,
00:59
so it is a shame that they have gone back.
01:03
Perhaps they have not gone back,
01:04
it is just that they have not been able to keep up
01:08
with the demand that has been created so much over the past few years.
01:14
But, as I say, what has happened is that they are now, I think,
01:18
improving the situation.
01:20
Just in terms of, for example, dermatology,
01:22
two clinical leads have been selected,
01:25
but recently there was a problem,
01:27
especially in the north-east in your area,
01:30
where everyone was dependent on one consultant.
01:34
And, of course, that creates a system that is not very robust.
01:38
So, things are improving, there is a clear path,
01:42
but it is obvious that the Government
01:46
that has a responsibility beyond that will keep a close eye on us.
