00:22I got to tell you, I'm so honored, Carrie, to be here to witness this for you because

00:28I've watched you over the years.

00:31He just gave your resume, but I just want to talk about some of the personal things

00:33that I've noticed about you.

00:36I remember when we met years ago, she comes walking up, she's beautiful, and this little

00:42dainty woman.

00:43She starts talking.

00:44I'm like, where is your inside voice?

00:45She was so loud.

00:46When I met her mother, I finally say, her mother's so delightful and just regal and

00:54classy.

00:55I was like, you're such an elegant woman.

00:56What happened to your daughter?

00:59We laugh about it often, but the truth is, is she is incredibly kind and giving and powerful

01:06and her heart speaks first.

01:09As I look at the roles that she has taken on from For Colored Girls to all of the things

01:13I would mention, she ... Ratchet ass.

01:22She approaches it with heart.

01:26She approaches it understanding that she's not just acting, but she's representing the

01:31people that she is portraying.

01:34With that, with that kind of love, with that kind of attention, she approaches every detail.

01:39I had a chance to spend some time ... I just forget these cards.

01:42I had a chance to spend some time with her and her family on vacation.

01:46I watched how much she loved and honored her parents.

01:50I watched how much she loved and honored her husband and her children, how she fiercely

01:55protects their privacy.

01:58This made me laugh because we were walking back to the room and all of my family, her

02:02family on holiday, walking back to the room.

02:05Because she embodies these characters so much, when she was pregnant with her daughter, she

02:11was doing Scandal.

02:13As she was walking back to the room, the baby's walking in front of us with her diaper on.

02:17I'm looking at her and I'm like, I said, Carrie, she's walking like Olivia Pope.

02:22She's got the whole walk down all the way to the room.

02:27I think that she passed it on to the baby in her DNA.

02:31With that said, as I think about the life that she's lived as an activist, as a woman,

02:36as a person, as a person of color, the character that she has exhibited for everyone to see,

02:44I'm so incredibly proud of her.

02:46I want the absolute best for you in everything you do.

02:50As I look here and I realize that a star is being given to you and your honor, what

02:57I know is that no one knows what it took for you to be Carrie Washington.

03:04They don't know how much you've prayed and cried and worked your way through.
