At least 12 people have been killed due to flooding and landslides in the eastern and central parts of Sri Lanka after heavy rains drenched the country over the past three days, a top disaster official said on Thursday (Nov 28). 00:00At least 12 people have died in eastern and central Sri Lanka due to flooding and landslides

00:07triggered by heavy rains over the past three days.

00:10According to Anoja Seneviratne, Director of the Disaster Management Center, four of the

00:15victims were students who drowned after the tractor they were traveling in overturned

00:20and was swept away by floodwaters in Eravur, about 310 kilometers east of the capital.

00:26The remaining fatalities occurred in separate incidents involving landslides and people

00:30being washed away by rising waters.

00:33Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology reported that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal

00:38is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and make landfall on the island's east coast

00:44by Thursday.

00:45However, the department forecasts that the storm's impact will begin to ease by Saturday.
