Harvey Weinstein, Sajid Khan, Kevin Spacey, Vikas Bahl... This is how Hollywood and Bollywood dealt with #MeToo differently.
Transcript
00:00Sajid Khan is on Bigg Boss.
00:02Vikas Pehle's new movie released a few days ago.
00:04And Nana Partiker just interviewed the Maharashtra Chief Minister.
00:08Has India failed its MeToo victims?
00:16When the MeToo movement gained momentum in the US,
00:19it brought down even the biggest names in Hollywood.
00:22Film producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexually harassing more than 80 women.
00:27And even though he denied the allegations,
00:29he was removed from his production company and suspended from prominent film bodies.
00:33When director Sajid Khan was accused by about half a dozen women during MeToo,
00:38he said he sat at home for four years.
00:40But in 2022, he was not only a part of one of India's most-watched reality shows,
00:45but also gearing up to release his new film,
00:48starring the likes of Ritesh Deshmukh, John Ibrahim, Shahnaz Gill and Nora Fateh.
00:53But in future, will you work with him again?
00:55If everything goes well, if he's acquainted with everything,
00:58after that, surely I will.
00:59Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey was accused of sexually assaulting another actor
01:04when the victim was just 14 years old.
01:06The actor not only apologised,
01:07If I did behave then, as he describes,
01:10I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour.
01:15And I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.
01:19He was also dropped from his series House of Cards and shunned from film projects.
01:24But when actor Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Partiker of molesting her
01:28while shooting for a song,
01:29He was being very aggressive, he was pushing me around.
01:33I complained about him, my complaint was not heard.
01:35Then he demanded to do an intimate step with me on top of it.
01:39And they insisted, they were pressurising me to do an intimate step.
01:43Partiker denied the allegation.
01:44I have already given an answer to this 10 years ago.
01:46But you have not given an answer to it yet.
01:48Now whatever is false is false.
01:49FIRs and lawsuits followed and Partiker was given a clean chit by the Mumbai police
01:54because of a lack of strong evidence.
01:56But what was really disheartening was the industry's reaction to the entire matter.
02:00Firstly, I want to know your reaction on accusing Nana Partiker,
02:04a veteran actor like Nana Partiker, of sexual misconduct.
02:06Neither is my name Tanushree nor is my name Nana Partiker.
02:12How did you answer my question?
02:14This is a point of no return for me.
02:16American comedian and actor Louis CK too was accused of exposing himself
02:20and masturbating in front of 5 women.
02:22He confessed and streaming platforms like HBO and Netflix cut ties with him.
02:26His film release was cancelled and his comedy shows crapped.
02:29In contrast, when filmmaker Vikas Pahel was accused of assault and misconduct,
02:34he went on to work with stars like Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan.
02:37In fact, when his business partners Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwani
02:42sided with the victim, Pahel filed a defamation suit against them.
02:46I think the law should take its course.
02:48But yes, definitely, women should speak up
02:51and the men who have committed such things should be punished.
02:55There was also Anu Malik, Alok Nath and Subhash Ghai
02:59who were all accused but seem to be doing just fine now.
03:02But it might not be all bad.
03:04The MeToo movement took India by storm and celebrities took a stand for the victims.
03:08It opened the floodgates and hammered in the fact that
03:10sexual misconduct has no place in the country.
03:14What will change?
03:16Only time will tell.
03:17All the women stand by all the women
03:19and all the men should also stand by all the women.
03:21If they're saying so, we must hear them out.
