00:08Can kissing someone with a beard cause rashes like this?

00:12We asked board-certified dermatologist,

00:14Dr. Kimberly Chow, to shave down the scruff on beard burn.

00:18Beard burn is another name for contact dermatitis,

00:22essentially.

00:23What happens is that friction is rubbing on the skin,

00:27which causes irritation, rash, itching, redness.

00:32Another name for beard burn, you might have heard,

00:34is mustache rash or stache rash.

00:36Beard burn itself is really just,

00:39I think about it like it's a rug burn,

00:41so it doesn't have to be an infection.

00:44Like, what the f**k?

00:47It was weeping this morning.

00:49The most common infection is gonna be

00:52from the bacteria that normally live in our skin,

00:54like staph or strep,

00:57but truly anything could cause an infection.

01:01Herpes has a higher risk of getting into any skin

01:04that is just an open wound.

01:06It's actually really bad.

01:08Beard burn is not caused by guys not cleaning their beard,

01:13and that's not to say that guys shouldn't clean their beard.

01:16You should keep a clean beard

01:17because if you were to give somebody a beard burn,

01:20you might increase the risk of their beard burn

01:22getting infected if your beard itself is not clean.

01:27It just keeps getting better.

01:30If you tend to have more sensitive skin in general,

01:33you are definitely more susceptible to getting beard burn.

01:37If you tend to have really dry skin,

01:41if you have skin that's very allergic to certain products,

01:45eczema skin, rosacea skin,

01:48any skin that already has existing inflammation or rash.

01:52If you are a guy and you have a beard

01:57and you want to prevent giving somebody else beard burn,

02:00the best thing to do is to keep your beard

02:03sort of a medium length,

02:06and you want to keep your beard moisturized as well

02:10because softer hair is going to be a little less friction.

02:13Ugh, it's right there.

02:15Don't make it look like it's gross.

02:17If you were to get beard burn,

02:19the best thing to do is to be gentle,

02:22gentle, gentle with your skin.

02:24It's a nice crust in there.

02:26You want to avoid the temptation to cleanse it with alcohol,

02:32cleanse it with hydrogen peroxide, throw neosporin on it.

02:36And then the second most important thing

02:37is to keep your skin really moisturized.

02:40So use a gentle moisturizer without any fragrance,

02:45something you already know doesn't irritate your skin.

02:48If you are keeping your skin really moisturized,

02:52it might take like three, five days,

02:55but if it becomes secondarily infected

02:58or you're throwing things on your skin

03:00that's making your skin even more irritated,

03:03it could take even longer.
