00:00The American press said this film would start race riots all across America.

00:25That film came out in 1989.

00:29I wrote it in 1988.

00:34When you see brother Eric Garner, when you see King George Floyd murdered, lynched, I

00:40think of Raider Rahim.

00:44And you would think and hope that 30-something motherfucking years later, the black people

00:53would stop being hunted down like animals.

00:59We expect our governments to make sure that the laws of equal pay for equal work are upheld.

01:14As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these steps today

01:21as a symbol of our determination and our commitment to progress.

01:36In the same period, 1,688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs.

01:45In the 71 years of this world-renowned festival, there have been only 12 female heads of its

01:53juries.

02:15Everyone should wear flats, to be honest, at the best of times.

02:21We shouldn't wear high heels.

02:23Anyway, that's very disappointing, obviously.

02:45People lose their lives and disappear in the sand, in the deserts, or they dissolve

02:50in the water, in the ocean here.

02:54And the world is melting, and these guys are basically ruling with, you know, rage and

03:01angriness and lies.

03:05And they are basically stating or writing fiction and making people believe that those

03:11are real things and facts.

03:14So I think the only thing I personally can react to is, I'm not a politician, but as

03:19an artist, I can basically just express through my work and with a heart open just basically

03:27what I think.

03:39I would love to see more women directors, because, you know, they represent half the

03:45population and gave birth to the whole world.

03:52It's quite harsh when you first experience the world of filmmaking.
