00:00The 35th Annual 17th Street High Heel Race kicked off Halloween weekend in Washington

00:12D.C.

00:13The yearly event welcomes participants to dress up in their favorite heels and costumes

00:17for the three block race.

00:19Spectators line the street to watch runners make their way to the finish line.

00:22According to the event's site, the race started over 35 years ago as a wager among

00:27drag queens, bartenders, and community members to race in heels to each of the LGBTQ plus

00:34bars along the strip.

00:35The Mayor of D.C. and the Mayor's Office for LGBTQ Affairs hosts the race every year

00:41on the Tuesday before Halloween.
