Qatar European Parliament bribery

World Cup host Qatar is now being accused of bribing European Parliament officials for their government-making decisions.

00:00Qatar has already been accused of bribing FIFA members to secure a World Cup bid,

00:04but a new investigation alleges it may also be bribing European Parliament officials.

00:08So what did the investigation uncover? Brute can explain in less than 60 seconds.

00:12European authorities have conducted at least 20 raids in Brussels,

00:15during which they found and compensated over 1.5 million dollars.

00:20After the raids, a Belgian judge charged four individuals with money laundering,

00:23corruption, and taking part in a criminal organization on behalf of a Gulf state.

00:27And while European authorities have not specifically named Qatar as the Gulf state,

00:31many Belgian media outlets have. Belgian prosecutors believe that

00:35third parties in political and or strategic positions within the European Parliament

00:39were paid large sums of money or offered substantial gifts to influence Parliament's decision.

00:44Those third parties, according to some Belgian media, is the country of Qatar.

00:48Qatar has denied the claims and released this statement.

00:52It remains unclear if the situation is in any way related to the World Cup

00:55and the country's winning hosting bid.
