00:00I was too busy raising my kids to realize what was happening.

00:10I would go over and you'd see like 30 boxes covered with a sheet.

00:13And I was like, what's that? He's like, it's nothing.

00:15We don't tell anybody about this.

00:18That was it for 40 years.

00:20I had to escape. I remember seeing a therapist and I finally let it out.

00:24My husband has comics.

00:30My father got the first solo issue of Superman from 1939.

00:34It was locked away for decades.

00:36He found out that was the second nicest copy of that book on the planet.

00:40That book could easily go for $3 to $4 million.

00:45It inherited over a million collectibles.

00:48What's that box value then?

00:50$80,000 to $90,000.

00:55My father had Asperger's, but not knowing it caused a lot of friction.

00:59It was like ultimate fixation and hoarding.

01:02He kept collecting and needed more space and more space and more space.

01:05You have no idea how oppressive he can be.

01:08He was constantly neurotic about the security of the collection.

01:11We have each of them humidity controlled, climate controlled, multiple layers of security.

01:15He would have thought that was cool.

01:17I'm sure his father loved him, but I don't know if Darren truly felt it.

01:20Nothing Darren did was ever good enough.

01:22He made life livable, but not worth living.

01:24I divorced. I said, I don't want any part of them.

01:26If I wasn't around, there would be a big dumpster outside and she would just throw them in.

01:30Actually, she'd recycle.

01:33We have no idea what's in that box.

01:36Oh wow, I need that.

01:39Yeah, I need that too.

01:40Where do we go from here? That's the question, right?

01:43Comics are super valuable and they're booming.

01:46Why Hollywood?

01:48We're just still seeing the rise of the comics.

01:49Who would pay this much money for such a book? It's fascinating.

01:54I'd sell it.

01:55If you want to give me three and a half million dollars for that comic, buh-bye.

01:59There is a little bit of responsibility to make sure some of this stuff is preserved.

02:02This stuff survived world wars, depressions, cultural differences, racial realizations, women's rights.

02:08Everything is reflected in these stories.

02:13I want to work with people that want to be involved in sharing it.

02:16We're going to put so many of these books in the right hands that people are going to lose their shit.

02:22It would be amazing to have some of these key books end up with like the biggest fan of Superman or the biggest fan of Batman.

02:29How do we find those people?

02:30Clearly, trust is a huge thing.

02:32Well, what if we pick them up and blindfold them?

02:34If I say something offensive, it will be cut out, right?

02:38It'll be very interesting the kind of people that we deal with along the way

02:41and what their intentions are for acquiring some of these collectibles.

02:45One of my buddies came by, he saw the books at the Hatchback and he's like, oh, Hatchback comics.

02:50Kidding the dad, I guess. I'm the Hatchback dad.

02:55The stuff in here is worthy of being in a safe like this.

03:25We didn't know we had these two until you just witnessed it.

03:28Having that excuse to get back together and go on a treasure hunt.

03:36Superman relies so heavily on the father-son relationship on so many levels.
