EV tariff cloud continues to hang over China and EU

Leading Chinese car manufacturers are calling for more negotiations between China and the EU hoping to end tariffs on Chinese EVs.    The tariffs of up to 45 percent were imposed after the EU said China's carmakers benefit from state subsidies. Beijing has denied this. 00:58gathered in Geneva this month for an industry discussion.

01:08united industry representatives with international organizations and local governments.

01:15They discussed the regulations and the standards of the industry as well as trends and major challenges.

01:21Of course they are concerned about that. That's the fact.

01:26We cannot ignore this because I think every car manufacturer is concerned about this thing.

01:35But right now the current situation I think is harmful for both sides.

01:41We don't want that to happen.

01:43Several weeks ago the European Commission gave the final green light

01:47to raise tariffs on electric vehicles made in China for the next five years.

01:52In turn, China has requested World Trade Organization dispute consultations

01:58with the European Union regarding this decision.

02:02The goal of these consultations is to discuss the matter

02:05and to find a satisfactory solution without proceeding further.

02:11Switzerland is not expected to adopt the EU's tariffs against Chinese e-cars

02:17due to its free trade agreement with China.

02:20Automobile industry analysts point out that imposing EU's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

02:26could in the short term affect the price competitiveness of Chinese manufacturers in the European market.

02:32However, they say that in the long run you should not deter Chinese EV manufacturers

02:38from pursuing opportunities in the EU.
