00:09:04Isola Madre
00:09:10For the traveller arriving in Stresa from the southern start of Lake Maggiore, the first
00:09:15island of the Gulf of Porromeo to appear is Isola Madre, once called Isola San Vittore,
00:09:21due to the presence of a chapel dedicated to the saints, and then Isola Renata.
00:09:26In 1501, the diocesan administration of Novara, the owner of a large part of the island, sold
00:09:33it to Nancillotto Borromeo, on condition that he kept the church open for worship.
00:09:39In 1502, the church was demolished, with the obligation to rebuild it on Isola Inferiore
00:09:45or Isola Bella.
00:09:47From that time onwards, the island began to change.
00:09:50Work began on construction of a palace as a summer residence of the Borromeo family,
00:09:56while in the garden olive trees, vines and citruses were planted, and in 1603 it was
00:10:01already described as a delightful and salubrious place, due to the quality of the air, which
00:10:08is exceedingly temperate.
00:10:10For the modern visitor, the island is still a delightful spot.
00:10:15The garden is exquisite throughout the year, especially in the spring, when hundreds of
00:10:19flowers, azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias, wisteria and many others are in
00:10:27bloom.
00:10:28Strolling around this garden full of surprises, with white and multicolored peacocks, silver
00:10:34and golden pheasants, ducks and moorhens appearing unexpectedly, is a memorable experience.
