Gregor Gieson has avoided a jail term, but he has been sentenced to a 12-month community
00:08
corrections order, and that includes 100 hours of community service.
00:14
He's also required to submit to ongoing psychiatric or psychological treatment to gain insight
00:21
into his offending.
00:23
Now all of this harks back to late last year when he was charged, as you said, with one
00:28
count each of assault and emotional abuse.
00:31
That led to a criminal court hearing here at the Hobart Magistrate's Court, where an
00:37
interstate magistrate ultimately found him guilty of both offences.
00:42
In relation to the assault charge, that involved him forcefully shaking, pushing and punching
00:49
a woman in the chest, and that caused her to fall backwards and strike her head against
00:54
a mantelpiece, causing concussion and bruising.
00:58
In relation to the emotional abuse charge, that related to Gregory Gieson using technology
01:05
to track her movements and also to verbally abuse her with some quite vicious language.
01:14
Now the prosecution had said that he should be given a term of imprisonment, even if it
01:21
was suspended.
01:23
The defence had argued that his reputation had been severely damaged over the course
01:28
of all of the coverage relating to this case, and that they said no conviction should be
01:33
recorded, but the magistrate today said that a conviction would be recorded.
01:39
She said the offending was serious, that the victim had been left with ongoing physical
01:46
and emotional trauma, and that Gregory Gieson had shown no sign of remorse.
01:53
And how did Gregory Gieson react to the sentence, Jono?
01:58
Well in the courtroom he showed no sign of emotion as the sentencing remarks were read
02:04
out by the magistrate.
02:06
Outside court we saw him with his family, and he was asked by the media whether he had
02:13
any comments to make, whether he was remorseful for his actions, and he repeatedly said that
02:19
he had no comments to make.
02:22
Now what we heard this week in court is that he has tendered his resignation from the Supreme
02:30
Court.
02:31
He has been on full pay since the charges were laid last year, but we heard in court
02:36
that he acknowledged he no longer had the moral authority to sit on the bench.
