00:46Good morning, Clarence, and welcome to Rise and Shine Pilipinas.

00:51Hello, good morning.

00:52Good morning. We want to know more about you.

00:55How did you get into writing?

00:59Actually, before I started writing, I knew people who introduced me to visual artists,

01:04from traditional painting to digital arts.

01:08Arts really gave me a definition of who I am.

01:11In writing, it's always inside me.

01:14It's just that I don't get the opportunity to show or showcase what I can do in writing

01:19because the opportunities I get are focused on being a visual artist.

01:23From elementary to high school to college, I was a student journalist.

01:29I am an editorial writer, feature writer,

01:32but the category they always give me is editorial cartooning.

01:36And I remember when I was in grade 8,

01:39we were asked to write and discuss our own short story.

01:43And while I'm presenting, my teacher stopped me and she asked,

01:46Are you sure you wrote that, son?

01:48I heard that as a compliment.

01:50And from then on, I was convinced that I had potential in this field.

01:54And since my course is Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino,

01:58I expected that I would really write in my course.

02:01And the first door that opened for me to show that I can write

02:07was the joining of Spoken Word Poetry in our university.

02:10After several times of joining and winning,

02:13that's when I was convinced that I have a space in the world of writing.

02:19In fairness, aside from your tone,

02:21I also feel that you are one of the people who wrote from there

02:25on how to tell a story clearly and truly from your lived experiences.

02:31You also said about art, which talks about you.

02:35Art not only inspires us, but it actually disturbs us.

02:39In my interpretation, you have this book titled,

02:42Dear Papa Jesus, I hope I'm not a fool.

02:45I know there is a break in the stereotyping from this book.

02:49But I have this interpretation that it might be disturbed.

02:52Because, you know, I'm disturbed because Papa Jesus is a fool.

02:55But I want to know, what is this about?

02:58And what was your inspiration for this?

03:02This story is about the dream of a solidary society

03:06and the independence of a young man named Austin, our main character.

03:09He often prays and wishes that he will not be a fool.

03:13He will be accompanied by his close friend, Jacob,

03:16on his journey to a place that he did not choose.

03:20But there are things that will not last forever.

03:23There are things that will change,

03:25things that will leave and come back,

03:27and there are things that will stumble and, of course, will stumble.

03:30The title, Dear Papa Jesus, I hope I'm not a fool,

03:33is the very origin that is always mentioned in the prayers of young people.

03:38Even if this is not a common experience in LGBTQIA+,

03:41maybe most people say it and continue to wish for it.

03:47Maybe because of the painful words, discrimination, and fear, this is said.

03:54And I am happy with those who message me because they are looking for Jacob.

03:58If there is a literal Jacob in my life.

04:01But the character of Jacob is inspired by all the people in my life

04:06who gave acceptance and love.

04:09Like my parents, siblings, cousins, teachers, my students, and of course, my friends.

04:15Maybe that's how comforting the character of Jacob is because he came from love.

04:21I can't say that this story is my autobiography.

04:24Even if I made Austin's character based on being a Christian when I was young

04:29and based on my own experiences, many did not agree.

04:33Even in reality, I can see that Austin felt a lot that I did not experience.

04:38There were words that I heard and asked where the child received from Clarence.

04:42Even so, I am happy that they liked the story.

04:45I hope I can read that too.

04:47And it looks very inspiring, right?

04:49Bringing back my inner child.

04:51But this is your first book that will be published soon.

04:56What do you feel when you see that this book will finally be released?

05:03When I posted it last November 2, 2022, it was just a mock-up book.

05:08I just edited it.

05:09But now I can manifest it to be true.

05:11And I'm really happy receiving messages from the readers and their stories.

05:15Aside from being a published book, I am happy that I was able to inspire people

05:19and heal them through my words.

05:22Okay, in terms of the journey of writing the book up until it is almost published,

05:27we want to know what is the most challenging part of writing this book?

05:33I wrote this story as a requirement in my major subject in college.

05:37We were asked to write a long story that should consist of a minimum of 12,000 words.

05:43We were given a month to write it.

05:46But since I am a student journalist and part of The Educator's Gazette,

05:49we are busy covering events, making newsletters, magazines, and literary folios.

05:54I forgot that I have a project like this.

05:56And so, two days before the submission, when I got home from school,

06:00it was 5 p.m.

06:01I had a cup of coffee and sat down in front of my laptop.

06:04I wrote whatever came to my mind.

06:07And aside from time, it was a challenge for me to remember my own experiences.

06:13They are painful to feel again.

06:15They are painful to see in my imagination again.

06:17And of course, I was careful in choosing the words

06:20because I don't want them to give a far-fetched interpretation of what I want to convey.

06:25Well, a big part of our society today has already accepted,

06:30welcoming, and affirming.

06:31But there could be some who did not approach this.

06:35So, how would you handle in case the bashing

06:40or the criticism about your book?

06:45Okay.

06:46A lot of people commented on my viral post on TikTok

06:49that my title, Dear Papa Jesus, is wrong.

06:51Technically, because we are not Papa Jesus.

06:54But in reality, when we were young,

06:57Dear Papa Jesus was our first prayer.

06:59And before I wrote and published this,

07:02I became a strong child.

07:04And maybe if I was able to read when I was young,

07:07when I was reading the story I wrote,

07:09maybe I did not live in fear.

07:11Maybe if I reached my full potential earlier,

07:14if I enriched the talents and abilities that I have,

07:17because there were a lot of times when I stopped them from going out

07:20because I was afraid that they would give me the spotlight

07:23and they would find out that I am gay.

07:25Books like this are not just stories about LGBTQIA+.

07:31This is a reflection of what is really happening in our society

07:34that should not be romanticized.

07:36And this book will help to enlighten those who are confused

07:41to embrace young people of all ages

07:45who are in this situation of anxiety and fear

07:48to try to make them understand

07:50and to accept the truth.

07:52To accept that there is no but, but, but, and but.

07:56To understand each other, to understand people

07:59who make us colorful and make us happy.

08:01Acceptance, not tolerance.

08:04Do you have a message for the spying writers

08:07who want to write their own book?

08:11Don't be afraid, don't be ashamed.

08:13It's better if you expose yourself to things that you are afraid to do.

08:18As a writer, my main dream is not to be famous.

08:23On the contrary, I want to be an effective writer

08:27because all positive things will follow

08:30if you are able to write, make people happy,

08:33and inspire your readers.

08:45And I'm really trying my best to release it as a physical book

08:48as much as possible since it's self-published

08:50and I don't have that much means to do it right away.
