Imagine reading a book that also reflects your personal journey and experiences.
00:05
Gender books are a safe space to explore and learn.
00:10
They help us break down complex topics into relatable stories,
00:16
making them accessible and engaging for everyone.
00:20
They also help us fight stereotypes
00:24
and build an inclusive society where everyone has the freedom to express their true selves.
00:31
If you're looking for answers, support, or just want to broaden your perspective,
00:36
gender books are your go-to resource.
00:39

00:43
and book author Clarence Narciso.
00:46
Good morning, Clarence, and welcome to Rise and Shine Pilipinas.
00:51
Hello, good morning.
00:52
Good morning. We want to know more about you.
00:55
How did you get into writing?
00:59
Actually, before I started writing, I knew people who introduced me to visual artists,
01:04
from traditional painting to digital arts.
01:08
Arts really gave me a definition of who I am.
01:11
In writing, it's always inside me.
01:14
It's just that I don't get the opportunity to show or showcase what I can do in writing
01:19
because the opportunities I get are focused on being a visual artist.
01:23
From elementary to high school to college, I was a student journalist.
01:29
I am an editorial writer, feature writer,
01:32
but the category they always give me is editorial cartooning.
01:36
And I remember when I was in grade 8,
01:39
we were asked to write and discuss our own short story.
01:43
And while I'm presenting, my teacher stopped me and she asked,
01:46
Are you sure you wrote that, son?
01:48
I heard that as a compliment.
01:50
And from then on, I was convinced that I had potential in this field.
01:54
And since my course is Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino,
01:58
I expected that I would really write in my course.
02:01
And the first door that opened for me to show that I can write
02:07
was the joining of Spoken Word Poetry in our university.
02:10
After several times of joining and winning,
02:13
that's when I was convinced that I have a space in the world of writing.
02:19
In fairness, aside from your tone,
02:21
I also feel that you are one of the people who wrote from there
02:25
on how to tell a story clearly and truly from your lived experiences.
02:31
You also said about art, which talks about you.
02:35
Art not only inspires us, but it actually disturbs us.
02:39
In my interpretation, you have this book titled,
02:42
Dear Papa Jesus, I hope I'm not a fool.
02:45
I know there is a break in the stereotyping from this book.
02:49
But I have this interpretation that it might be disturbed.
02:52
Because, you know, I'm disturbed because Papa Jesus is a fool.
02:55
But I want to know, what is this about?
02:58
And what was your inspiration for this?
03:02
This story is about the dream of a solidary society
03:06
and the independence of a young man named Austin, our main character.
03:09
He often prays and wishes that he will not be a fool.
03:13
He will be accompanied by his close friend, Jacob,
03:16
on his journey to a place that he did not choose.
03:20
But there are things that will not last forever.
03:23
There are things that will change,
03:25
things that will leave and come back,
03:27
and there are things that will stumble and, of course, will stumble.
03:30
The title, Dear Papa Jesus, I hope I'm not a fool,
03:33
is the very origin that is always mentioned in the prayers of young people.
03:38
Even if this is not a common experience in LGBTQIA+,
03:41
maybe most people say it and continue to wish for it.
03:47
Maybe because of the painful words, discrimination, and fear, this is said.
03:54
And I am happy with those who message me because they are looking for Jacob.
03:58
If there is a literal Jacob in my life.
04:01
But the character of Jacob is inspired by all the people in my life
04:06
who gave acceptance and love.
04:09
Like my parents, siblings, cousins, teachers, my students, and of course, my friends.
04:15
Maybe that's how comforting the character of Jacob is because he came from love.
04:21
I can't say that this story is my autobiography.
04:24
Even if I made Austin's character based on being a Christian when I was young
04:29
and based on my own experiences, many did not agree.
04:33
Even in reality, I can see that Austin felt a lot that I did not experience.
04:38
There were words that I heard and asked where the child received from Clarence.
04:42
Even so, I am happy that they liked the story.
04:45
I hope I can read that too.
04:47
And it looks very inspiring, right?
04:49
Bringing back my inner child.
04:51
But this is your first book that will be published soon.
04:56
What do you feel when you see that this book will finally be released?
05:03
When I posted it last November 2, 2022, it was just a mock-up book.
05:08
I just edited it.
05:09
But now I can manifest it to be true.
05:11
And I'm really happy receiving messages from the readers and their stories.
05:15
Aside from being a published book, I am happy that I was able to inspire people
05:19
and heal them through my words.
05:22
Okay, in terms of the journey of writing the book up until it is almost published,
05:27
we want to know what is the most challenging part of writing this book?
05:33
I wrote this story as a requirement in my major subject in college.
05:37
We were asked to write a long story that should consist of a minimum of 12,000 words.
05:43
We were given a month to write it.
05:46
But since I am a student journalist and part of The Educator's Gazette,
05:49
we are busy covering events, making newsletters, magazines, and literary folios.
05:54
I forgot that I have a project like this.
05:56
And so, two days before the submission, when I got home from school,
06:00
it was 5 p.m.
06:01
I had a cup of coffee and sat down in front of my laptop.
06:04
I wrote whatever came to my mind.
06:07
And aside from time, it was a challenge for me to remember my own experiences.
06:13
They are painful to feel again.
06:15
They are painful to see in my imagination again.
06:17
And of course, I was careful in choosing the words
06:20
because I don't want them to give a far-fetched interpretation of what I want to convey.
06:25
Well, a big part of our society today has already accepted,
06:30
welcoming, and affirming.
06:31
But there could be some who did not approach this.
06:35
So, how would you handle in case the bashing
06:40
or the criticism about your book?
06:45
Okay.
06:46
A lot of people commented on my viral post on TikTok
06:49
that my title, Dear Papa Jesus, is wrong.
06:51
Technically, because we are not Papa Jesus.
06:54
But in reality, when we were young,
06:57
Dear Papa Jesus was our first prayer.
06:59
And before I wrote and published this,
07:02
I became a strong child.
07:04
And maybe if I was able to read when I was young,
07:07
when I was reading the story I wrote,
07:09
maybe I did not live in fear.
07:11
Maybe if I reached my full potential earlier,
07:14
if I enriched the talents and abilities that I have,
07:17
because there were a lot of times when I stopped them from going out
07:20
because I was afraid that they would give me the spotlight
07:23
and they would find out that I am gay.
07:25
Books like this are not just stories about LGBTQIA+.
07:31
This is a reflection of what is really happening in our society
07:34
that should not be romanticized.
07:36
And this book will help to enlighten those who are confused
07:41
to embrace young people of all ages
07:45
who are in this situation of anxiety and fear
07:48
to try to make them understand
07:50
and to accept the truth.
07:52
To accept that there is no but, but, but, and but.
07:56
To understand each other, to understand people
07:59
who make us colorful and make us happy.
08:01
Acceptance, not tolerance.
08:04
Do you have a message for the spying writers
08:07
who want to write their own book?
08:11
Don't be afraid, don't be ashamed.
08:13
It's better if you expose yourself to things that you are afraid to do.
08:18
As a writer, my main dream is not to be famous.
08:23
On the contrary, I want to be an effective writer
08:27
because all positive things will follow
08:30
if you are able to write, make people happy,
08:33
and inspire your readers.
08:36
Do you have your social media accounts that we can message?
08:40
Of course, once it's published, we should be able to buy it.
08:45
And I'm really trying my best to release it as a physical book
08:48
as much as possible since it's self-published
08:50
and I don't have that much means to do it right away.
08:53
There's a process to follow.
08:54
Just wait for the announcement on our Facebook account,
08:58
and on TikTok, if you can pre-order it.
09:01
You can pre-order it on Shopee.
09:04
And our target date to release it is at the end of November
09:09
or first week of December.
09:10
And I can wait for you to read it.
09:12
And dear readers,
09:14
I hope this is not your last chance to support the books I'm going to write.
09:19
As Jacob's character said,
09:21
you should always remember that you are loved,
09:24
even if you are a newbie.
09:26
Thank you so much for your story, and thank you so much for your time.
09:29
Clarence Narciso, good luck!
09:31
And I hope more people will support your books.
