My parents had to take equity release on their retirement house, they'd both
00:07
retired after a long career, mum was a schoolmistress before working for me in
00:12
the post office, my father was an insurance broker and another county
00:16
councillor before me, so we're well known in the community and we said well if you
00:23
pay it back initially we won't charge and then they said oh no we found out
00:29
your county councillor, you'll be front page news, we're charging and that was
00:34
that, so I was pleading guilty to try and reduce the sentence. I served four
00:42
months in Her Majesty's Prison Altschoss and it was dreadful seeing mum and dad
00:49
having to come in and see that, I felt more for them than for myself, I
00:58
knew what I was going through but they could only imagine, you know having said
01:02
that I was lucky, there were postmasters who had to go through far worse prisons
01:07
than Altschoss, another postmaster from North Wales, Noel Thomas, he had to
01:15
suffer waltz in one of the Altai prisons, I'm not sure if I'd have survived that.
