00:13Surfers arrived early, many of them having learned to surf only in their latter years.

00:20The event was organized by a local school focused on teaching surf to people aged 50

00:26and over.

00:29Participants said the sport keeps them healthy and also helps them with issues like depression

00:34or solitude.

00:38Organizers said a total of 98 people rode a wave at the same time, only 13 people away

00:44from the record of 110 established in South Africa in 2009.

00:51Regardless, organizers remain hopeful that this is the largest attempt by surfers over

00:5850 years of age.
