Matt Maher analyses Aston Villa's defeat at Liverpool

Matt Maher gives his take on another disappointing evening for Unai Emery's men. Villa were defeated for the fourth time in a row in all competitions and dropped to eighth in the Premier League.

00:00Good evening from Anfield where it finished Liverpool 2 Aston Villa 0.

00:07A fourth consecutive defeat for Villa for the first time under Uno Emery.

00:12This is now officially their worst run under the Spaniard and a largely frustrating night.

00:18Not a bad performance overall from Villa but they're undone.

00:22A lot of masses of their own downfall.

00:24In the first half it was a tale of four Villa corners.

00:28One that resorted in a Liverpool goal.

00:31Another that should have resorted in a Liverpool goal.

00:34And two that almost resorted in Villa goals with saves from Kaya the Liverpool goalkeeper.

00:42The first goal Villa had stifled Liverpool for the first 20 minutes.

00:46We're just coming into it.

00:48They have a corner.

00:50They lose the ball.

00:52They've got so many people upfield that suddenly Mo Salah's in a footrace with Leon Bailey which he wins.

00:56Bailey brings him down.

00:58Darwin Nunez rounds Emi Martinez and scores.

01:01And then five minutes later the exact same thing happens again.

01:05But then the two corners that Villa got right turned into two great saves.

01:10The first a header from Amadou Henana and the second an even better save from Diego Carlos.

01:17Villa saw plenty of the ball.

01:20It was a fairly even game in between the boxes.

01:24But they again got done on the counter attack in the end when they were pushing for an equaliser.

01:28And looking a more likely team to score.

01:30A mistake by Diego Carlos and Mo Salah ran clear to beat Emi Martinez.

01:35Liverpool go five points clear at the top of the league after Man City's defeat earlier.

01:40For Villa well this was a better performance than at Tottenham.

01:44And they also had a reason to have a grievance or they should have perhaps had a penalty in the second half.

01:50Well they probably should have had a penalty in the second half at 1-0 to be honest.

01:53Pavarotti's having his shirt pulled in the box.

01:56Neither the referee David Coutt or VAR Paul Tierney saw it as a foul.

02:01Which was then strange when two Villa players got booked or were penalised for shirt pulls it seems.

02:08Some shirt pulls are more serious than others.

02:11Or more serious than those in the box which is a bit odd.

02:14Four straight defeats for Villa.

02:15A better performance but the international break probably coming at the right time.
