Chinese group takes center stage at London’s Lord Mayor Show

The streets of London were buzzing on Saturday as thousands of people gathered for the Lord Mayor’s show.   The event celebrates people who helped shape the city’s identity, and this year a Chinese group took center stage.   CGTN’s Michael Marillier reports.

00:00Dance, drums and dogs. Robotic dogs to be exact.

00:07The Zhejiang UK Association hit the streets of London on Saturday.

00:11The group wanted to share a piece of Chinese culture with the city's residents.

00:15And they put on quite a show.

00:18It's a great day. The Lord Mayor's show is 800 years of history.

00:22And then we bring the element of 2,000 years of history of the drum dance.

00:26It's representing the culture, harmony. It's really a great day.

00:31We're dancing through and we tap our chopsticks.

00:35Our team were shouting and smiling all the way along.

00:39So it's really exciting, yeah.

00:42The Lord Mayor's show is a celebration of the cultures that give London its energy.

00:47And there was no shortage of that this time around.

00:50There's a real buzz right here in the heart of London.

00:53Even Big Ben has stopped to watch the show.

00:56The show is part of a tradition going back nearly 800 years.

01:01But the Zhejiang performers say its message matters more than ever.

01:05It's showing our children that everyone can get on, no matter what religion, what race, what background.

01:11It was just lovely to see such relationships being formed today.

01:17Of course, no Chinese parade is complete without Chinese pandas.

01:22It was good to see so many children.

01:24They're shouting, panda, panda, and they want to high-five.

01:28And people were saying, panda, looking this way.

01:31It was really exciting to see them.

01:33This event is a very British tradition.

01:36But there was a very Chinese flavor.

01:39And that's what the show is all about.

01:41Unity in diversity.
