I didn't have anybody. I didn't know anyone in the scene.
00:02
I didn't know anyone in the industry.
00:04
Tak ada connection, tak ada kabel, tak ada apa-apa.
00:06
So, really, I was scouted from YouTube.
00:16
Hi guys, this is Di and Trisha,
00:18
and you're listening to my Celebrity Podcast.
00:30
Oh my god.
00:32
I rasa I've never told people this part of my life,
00:40
where I came from, like post-pandemic.
00:43
I rasa macam where I came from has always been a mystery
00:47
for people who tak kenal saya dari awal, you know.
00:50
So, I'm from Bangi, Selangor.
00:56
And I came from a middle-income family.
01:01
Keluarga yang sederhana.
01:04
Sekolah SMK.
01:06
Normal. Pakai tidur di sekolah.
01:08
You know, things like that.
01:10
Koko, you know.
01:11
I love math.
01:14
I love English. I love art.
01:17
I took piano lessons.
01:19
I self-taught guitar.
01:21
I'm the second daughter of five siblings.
01:26
And my mom was a teacher.
01:29
And she is a writer. She's a novelist.
01:31
And my dad just works in private sector.
01:33
So, it's very average chain. Very normal family.
01:38
But alhamdulillah, my family's still together right now.
01:41
Came from a good support system, I would say.
01:47
Yeah, and then at 14, I started menjunak-junak kandiri in YouTube.
01:53
And I also became the YouTube girl at 16 years old.
02:03
Yeah.
02:06
Well, 14-year-old Diane wanted to be a Disney star.
02:13
You know, I grew up with Disney.
02:15
Watching a lot of Disney things.
02:17
And that's where even Nisibet Gwaii.
02:19
I'm like, wow! Someday I'm gonna be there.
02:21
I'm gonna be a Disney star.
02:24
And so, I thought...
02:25
Masa tu, I just wanted to showcase my talents on YouTube.
02:30
And then I started learning guitar.
02:32
And then started posting like tons of covers.
02:37
At that point, it wasn't a big thing on YouTube yet.
02:41
But there were a few like singer-songwriters,
02:44
female singer-songwriters that I remember that started with me.
02:49
I think I would say like...
02:52
Najwa Latif.
02:53
She was, I think, was the first one who like breakthrough on YouTube.
02:59
If I'm not mistaken.
03:00
I think her song Cinta Muka Buku ke, something like that.
03:03
And then, I was like the third or fourth wave.
03:07
I was the same kind of time with Tasha Manshahar.
03:12
I would say Nita as well.
03:14
So, we were...
03:16
Yeah, we were in the same batch of YouTube girls at that point.
03:20
Yeah, so...
03:21
It was really funny.
03:25
Like thinking about that right now.
03:26
Because back then, it was just small shows.
03:28
We would do just like online acoustic sessions.
03:32
And I would perform at like Frinjan.
03:34
I would perform at like...
03:36
Before X, it was Twitter, you know.
03:39
So, they would have like TweetFest.
03:41
I would perform at TweetFest.
03:43
Simple set up, just with my guitar.
03:45
It was the most simplest time back then.
03:49
Why are you making me like ingat balik all these things?
03:51
Oh my god, it's insane.
03:54
Yeah, and there would be a lot of like indie festivals.
03:57
And I would be the indie girl with the guitar.
04:00
And at that time, Yuna was the MySpace girl.
04:05
And she'd already like kickstarted her career.
04:08
And yeah, and I would never think that I would be a friend.
04:12
Like a really close friend now.
04:13
So, we shared a lot of things when it comes to like things like this.
04:16
It was very cute coming from where I came from.
04:20
It was very like innocent.
04:22
Serious.
04:23
It was so innocent at that time.
04:25
So, at that time, indie people were thriving.
04:29
And so, the indie scene was filled with like just...
04:33
Young boys and girls with big dreams.
04:35
To just like make it and bring like indie scene.
04:40
Like our songwriting to the mass main media.
04:52
Yeah, of course.
04:54
I didn't have anybody.
04:55
I didn't know anyone in the scene.
04:57
I didn't know anyone in the industry.
04:58
No connection, no cable, nothing.
05:00
So, really, I was scouted from YouTube.
05:04
And then from then, I think I was like,
05:08
Okay, maybe this could be a thing for me.
05:11
But I had to still study.
05:13
I still had to like finish my degree and everything.
05:16
And my mom was like, my parents like,
05:19
Being Asian, you know, Asian household.
05:21
Is it right to do this?
05:22
Like, why don't you study accounting?
05:24
And so, I did.
05:25
You know, I took accounting for my diploma.
05:28
I got...
05:29
I was a deanly student for four semesters.
05:32
And then after that, they were still like,
05:33
No, you have to get a degree.
05:35
And then I went on and get a degree in business.
05:39
I was a deanly student too.
05:41
And then after that, my parents were like,
05:43
Okay, you can do whatever you want now.
05:46
You know, but I was studying and working at the same time.
05:49
I was doing shows in the weekend,
05:51
classes on weekdays.
05:53
Alhamdulillah, I still get like good results
05:55
because I need to be an Asian daughter.
05:58
And so, yeah, my mom and dad was proud.
06:00
And because of that, they let me do whatever I want
06:03
because I think in a way, I have to sort of prove to them
06:07
that I can do this, you know.
06:10
And so, because of that, I feel like
06:13
they gave me the freedom to kind of make my own decisions
06:17
into who I wanted to become
06:18
because I got my degree, you know.
06:20
So, I think that was one of the challenges.
06:23
And second, it's just kind of like maneuver my way into
06:26
because I just had to like make friends,
06:29
be an adult, and be someone who
06:33
is learning her way through the industry
06:35
and learning the gains of it.
06:44
I think growing up with art and music
06:47
is something that I still have right now.
06:51
I think maybe my...
06:53
If there is, you know,
06:55
my parents are amazing people,
06:57
but if there's one thing that I can command to them,
06:59
like, thank you for giving me this,
07:01
it's that they really raised me up in an environment
07:06
filled with love.
07:08
That's one thing.
07:09
And also, my dad sent me to piano lessons
07:13
and my mom sent me to art class.
07:15
So, I really feel like those experiences and what I studied
07:19
shaped me into the person that I am today
07:22
because art and love is still very much like...
07:28
It really makes me as a person that I am today.
07:31
And also, my mom is like very...
07:34
Tekankan education.
07:36
And so, I feel like that's what I want people to tekankan also
07:39
because we didn't have influences back then.
07:41
So, we didn't know that that was a thing.
07:43
And so, we have to focus on education.
07:45
But you know, in this day and age, everyone can be...
07:49
You know, whatever they want with just record
07:51
and whatever they want to do with it.
07:53
But I still would highlight the importance of education
07:56
because it really shapes your mindset
07:58
and your decision-making and who you are
08:00
and your values as a person and your principles.
08:03
So, I feel like maybe because I came from there
08:06
and my family is also simple.
08:11
So, I feel like I still really want to have that humility in me.
08:17
I think that's what I feel.
08:21
You know?
08:27
I don't feel like I'll ever be fully ready or fully prepared
08:31
to face whatever that's out there.
08:36
But I've learned a lot.
08:39
I think maybe...
08:42
I'm not sure if it is any point but
08:45
maybe growing up as a second child
08:50
or more so the middle sibling
08:55
kind of like make you more independent in a way.
08:59
I've always have a sort of very stubborn mindset
09:03
in which like I have to get what I want.
09:06
Like if I want this thing, I have to get it.
09:08
And then, I will work towards that like 100%.
09:12
So, I think maybe that's what makes me stubborn
09:15
but in a good sense, in a good way.
09:18
So, when we talk about anxiety, I feel like
09:21
it's just what I developed as an adult.
09:27
You know, from all this pressure
09:31
and from strangers talking about you
09:34
and just kind of like, huh?
09:36
They think like that?
09:37
Yeah, I have a lot of like
09:39
going up into this industry
09:43
and like, huh? They think like that?
09:45
I have a lot of those moments.
09:47
But, why a lot of like, huh?
09:51
Huh? Like that.
09:52
So, I just have to like get used to like
09:54
other people's way of thinking.
09:57
Yeah, so maybe that kind of gave me anxiety in a way.
10:02
Thank you for watching episode 1.
10:04
Stay tuned for episode 2
