00:00Let's bring you up to date.
00:05Kamala Harris crisscrossing Michigan this Monday, Donald Trump heading to Georgia, another
00:09of the decisive swing states.
00:11This is one of the closest U.S. elections in history, the most divisive in memory.
00:16The row over Trump's racist rally in New York is overshadowing any other message the Republicans
00:21might try to push at this present moment.
00:24With only a week until November the 5th, election day, early voting has already seen more than
00:2941 million Americans cast ballots, joined today by this man, the outgoing Democratic
00:35President Joe Biden, voting in his hometown Wilmington, Delaware.
00:43Trump's rally in an enemy stronghold in New York was meant to be a show of strength.
00:49This Monday, the talk is of the over-racism on display and the embarrassment for the Grand
00:54Old Party, as the Republicans like to style themselves.
01:02Protesters outside New York's Madison Square Garden Stadium make it clear that for them
01:06Donald Trump is not welcome here, but thousands from all over the country have come out to
01:12see him.
01:13The fact that this can be happening in New York City, which is one of the most democratic
01:16and welcoming and equal places to live in the country, is embarrassing.
01:21I'm here to just remind the New York City community and the black community in New York
01:25specifically of Trump's history of racist behaviour, both against my community and communities
01:30in general.
01:32Trump's event has drawn comparisons from local officials to a Nazi rally held back in 1939
01:38here in Madison Square Garden.
01:40It's Trump's rhetoric about immigrants, amongst other things, that have led critics to make
01:46such comparisons.
01:48As we rescue our economy, I will also restore our borders.
01:54There's never been anything like it.
01:58It's bigger than inflation.
02:02It's bigger than the economy.
02:04What they're doing to our country, they're allowing criminals from all over the world
02:10to enter our country.
02:11We want people here who are going to build this country better, who are going to make
02:16money, who are going to contribute, rather than to destroy and take away.
02:20If you look at some of the tactics, especially the way that he talks about immigrants and
02:23dehumanises them very strategically, it is similar to what you've seen in other fascist
02:30movements.
02:31The stadium, which holds 20,000 people, was packed.
02:34Thousands more gathered outside, including Sylvia, who immigrated from Peru to New York
02:3925 years ago.
02:41She came from Jackson Heights in Queens to see Trump with her son.
02:45I don't believe he really wants to carry out mass deportations.
02:48He's just going to get the migrants who are delinquents out, the people who are coming
02:51here to steal.
02:52Her son explains that he thinks it's the Venezuelans who are the problem, not the Peruvians.
02:58Peruvians, you know, they came in to have a better job, but Venezuelans, no.
03:02They're here to kill, get arrested, robbed.
03:06Trump has promised he will win New York, a democratic stronghold, where one in every
03:11five residents was born abroad.
03:15Well, our reporter Jessica Luz de la Rey has more on the Trump rally and what happened.
03:28The racism and xenophobia at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally was just really clear,
03:33despite the fact that many of those in attendance were immigrants themselves.
03:37Trump made his usual comments about migrants wrecking the United States, but perhaps the
03:41most shocking words came from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who spoke before Trump and made
03:46this controversial joke about Puerto Rico, calling it a floating island of garbage.
03:51Now, whilst this has caused outrage from the Democrats, I spoke to some Latinos at the
03:55rally who were not bothered about the comments, and it seems clear that Trump's base supports
04:00him no matter what.
04:01Well, that said, there has reportedly been some frustration within the Trump campaign
04:06that Hinchcliffe's remarks are overshadowing those made by the former president at the
04:10rally.
04:12The Trump campaign put out a statement saying that Hinchcliffe's words do not reflect the
04:15views of the former president.
04:17Well, Trump's been courting Latino voters, and there are some polls suggesting that he
04:22has made some inroads into what would typically be really a democratic constituency.
04:27Now, what the racist comments show, yet again, is quite how closely Trump has associated
04:32himself with the more extreme fringe, people like far-right activist Laura Loomer.
04:37She's made racist comments about Kamala Harris on social media, and on Sunday night at the
04:41rally, I heard similar comments, one from an African-American woman who told me that
04:45Harris is a moron, and another who joked about her ethnic origins.
04:49The tone was really racist, misogynistic, and nasty, which was particularly shocking
04:53as it was coming from women.
04:55Now, a guy on the train to this rally who was from the Bronx was speaking to another
05:00guy from the Bronx who was wearing a MAGA hat, saying, how could you vote for Trump?
05:05He doesn't care about you.
05:06What's he going to do for you?
05:07He launched into this tirade on the train, with most of the carriage backing the guy
05:11who was against the one in the MAGA hat.
05:14Now, Trump is boasting that he is going to win New York.
05:17It'll be interesting to see if he does manage to make inroads here in this highly democratic state.
05:24Jessica Lumizuri, our correspondent there in New York, thanks to her, thanks to our
05:28team, of course, keeping us up to date with all developments on the US presidential election.
05:32We will keep you up to date on everything between now and voting day and beyond.
