We're down here in Wolverhampton where we're asking residents and shoppers what they think
00:05
of the upcoming car parking charge change.
00:10
The idea is that on November 4th the fees will change from £4.50 to around about £9
00:16
for a maximum stay.
00:17
So the price is almost double for a full car parking stay, as you can see behind me, the
00:21
daily charge is £4.50.
00:22
So yeah, that's going to almost double to £9.
00:24
So yeah, we're down here asking people what they think about the proposed changes and
00:28
if they think it's a good idea or if they think it will scare people away from the city
00:31
centre.
00:32
Yeah, so what do you think about the, well not proposed, they are changing on November
00:36
4th.
00:37
What do you think about the upcoming changes?
00:38
Well, it's news to me.
00:39
I mean, we considered today, didn't we, about parking, whether it was worth parking or whether
00:40
it was worth getting the bus.
00:41
And it was just about worth parking because the cost of that could return on the bus.
00:42
But yeah.
00:43
There's no point in it going up to £9.
00:44
No.
00:45
Absolutely not.
00:46
I mean, the town is dead anyway.
00:47
I mean, this is the city centre.
00:48
It's not going to go up to £9.
00:49
It's not going to go up to £9.
00:50
It's not going to go up to £9.
00:51
I mean, I think that's one of the biggest fears is that it might potentially scare more
01:08
people from visiting.
01:09
Of course it will.
01:10
You reckon that's like, you reckon, well, that's probably, it's probably the main fear,
01:12
isn't it?
01:13
Absolutely.
01:14
There's nothing to attract anyone here in Wolverhampton anyway.
01:15
So, I mean, parking, they should have free parking if anything, shouldn't they?
01:20
I mean, free parking would attract people, but no, I don't see the sense in it.
01:23
It's no, people, it's a lot of money, £9, it's no.
01:26
Free parking's trying to attract more people to come in obviously.
01:28
Of course it would.
01:29
Yeah, yeah.
01:30
You know, is Merrihill still free?
01:31
I think, you know, you, Merrihill people will go there won't they?
01:34
Do you reckon public transport's a viable option as well?
01:36
Yeah, definitely.
01:37
I think it's good value, £2 on the bus.
01:39
Yeah, absolutely.
01:40
You know, that's, you can't complain about it.
01:42
If we use the buses in the right park.
01:44
And this is what we're doing, so.
01:46
It's good.
01:48
Fantastic.
01:50
So we've spoken to a number of residents around Wolverhampton and shoppers
01:54
and also now we've spoken to students about the parking charge increase.
01:58
So, as far as students go, they do use the council car parks
02:03
when they do go to the university, when they go to their classes.
02:07
At the moment, public transport firms buy a heart.
02:10
They've also had the shuttle bus taken off of them as well.
02:12
And now, a student has said that the increase in the parking charge
02:16
is just going to make it near enough impossible for them to actually come to the classes
02:20
and it's just another added price that they've got to put on top of it.
02:22
So yeah, it's another angle to come from is that it is going to heavily affect the students
02:26
as well as shoppers and residents who do utilise the council car parks.
02:30
So here we are with Zena.
02:32
What do you think about the upcoming car parking charge changes?
02:35
I do think the charges jumping up to that amount is a lot of money
02:38
but hopefully it might make people think about using public transport a bit more
02:42
if I don't know what the charges of it is for a bus.
02:45
But it might be cheap, I don't know.
02:50
I suppose it depends how many come in.
02:52
If you've got a family coming, it might not be cheap.
02:55
Do you think it will scare people from visiting the city
02:58
or do you reckon it will just make them use public transport more?
03:00
I'd hope to think it would make people use public transport more
03:03
but like you said, there's a big shopping centre not too far away.
03:07
They might decide to go there where the car parking is totally free.
03:10
Absolutely.
