Walsall FC players Donervon Daniels and David Okagbue visit Whetstone Field Primary School to chat to the pupils as part of Black History Month.

00:00So, tell us how you found it today meeting all the kids and coming to the school.

00:06Yeah, it was good. You know, it's always good to see the kids and hear from them and see

00:14what they think of obviously the topic that we're here for and no, it was good, really

00:19good visit.

00:20How about you Donovan, how did you find meeting everyone?

00:23It was, it's enjoyable. I felt like the interaction and the feedback from the kids was like encouraging

00:33because it was a, it's not an easy topic to discuss but there was real engagement from

00:38them and I enjoyed learning from them as much as we would be giving to them as well. They

00:47gave to us, they had real energy and yeah, it was enjoyable. I enjoyed coming here too.

00:53And obviously, we've sort of done the visit around Black History Month and known for racism

00:58and everything around that. How, like you said, encouraging. How did you find speaking

01:02to them all about that and did they have lots of positive things to say?

01:06Yeah, they had an opinion and it was an opinion based on their own realities and it was nice

01:15to see how engaged they were with the topic because not everybody or every child is educated

01:23on Black History Month. So it was just nice and there was a real diverse viewpoint on

01:30it, even for kids of the age of nine, ten. We were saying it was-

01:36Yeah, so many answers. I weren't expecting it, they were very smart kids and yeah, it

01:41was good.

01:42And how much does that, obviously Black History Month this month, how much does that mean

01:46to you as sort of from your various backgrounds, both different backgrounds with Caribbean

01:51and African heritage, how much does that mean to you?

01:54Yeah, no, it's good. Especially when kids have got that opinion on it from a young age

02:00and I think you see that they're going to grow up to be good people and that's what

02:05you want and yeah, no, it's special. It's good to see.

02:09For me personally, black history is very important. I did an interview about a year

02:16ago, same time, around this time and my own history is something that I take great pride

02:24in and I try to continue to educate myself on. So whenever I get the opportunity to be

02:32part of discussions, whether it's with kids in year six or year five or adults or anyone,

02:42I enjoy it because I get to learn and I get to teach so it's something I always want to

02:46be part of.
