As households prepare for a significant rise in water bills, new figures show just how
00:06
much each region will feel the impact. Here in the South West, bills are projected
00:10
to increase by 13%, with the average customer expected to pay £561 by 2030.
00:17
This hike is part of a wider plan to improve water infrastructure, including upgrading
00:21
pipes, sewers and treatment facilities. At the same time, water quality remains a
00:27
growing concern. Despite efforts to address pollution, sewage
00:30
spills continue to rise. In May 2023, the Environment Agency said
00:35
that only 16% of assessed surface waters in England achieved good ecological status, raising
00:41
serious concerns about the environment and health risks linked to contaminated waterways.
00:46
Water companies are facing increasing scrutiny to resolve these problems, but the necessary
00:50
upgrades may take time. As water companies tackle these dual challenges,
00:54
families across the region will need to brace for higher bills in the years to come.
