A new study shows a growing contribution of universities to the continent's innovation ecosystem but laments the bloc's fragmentation is crippling the ability to turn high-level scientific research into economic competitiveness.

What are the most active European universities in terms of patent submissions?

A new report shows that most patents are submitted in a handful of places.

The most active university has been France's University of Grenoble,

with over 3,300 submissions,

followed by Zurich's ETH and Munich's Technical University.

In terms of countries, Germany filed the most applications,

followed by France, the UK and Italy.

However, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark and Belgium

have the highest average of applications compared to the number of universities.

The most active sectors have been pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and measurement.

However, the study says over 20% of the patents are not exploited commercially
