00:03CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown.
00:34And to all of you at home, a very happy New Year.
00:38I hope you had a wonderful festive season.
00:40Not too much partying, chilling out certainly,
00:42but also, of course, making New Year resolutions.
00:45I know I've made mine, but I'm not going to tell you what it was.
00:49What lies ahead?
00:51Cryptic.
00:52Quite a lot, Rachel, that's what lies ahead.
00:55For one thing is absolutely certain, there'll be a general election in May.
00:59The outcome, we may well have a new Prime Minister, we may not.
01:02And in September, Rachel, history could well be made,
01:05because our dear Queen, Queen Elizabeth II,
01:08will then become the longest-reigning monarch ever,
01:13exceeding and surpassing her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria,
01:17more than 64 years on the throne.
01:20So that'll be a big cheer that day for her, I'm sure.
01:23And what am I looking forward to this year?
01:26A little bit of a quieter year.
01:28Really?
01:29How about you?
01:30You say that every year, and then you're busy every day,
01:32travelling round the country and selling bananas in the West Indies and all sorts.
01:36This year, time to settle down.
01:38What about you, a young girl like you?
01:40Well, it's my last year in my 20s this year.
01:43So my school friends are going to start turning 30.
01:46I've got one friend that's got a baby on the way,
01:48other ones are getting married.
01:50And I'm personally looking forward to hopefully some more Champions League action,
01:53because last year was a bit of a dry spell.
01:55Well, thanks, Rachel. Now, who have we got with us today?
01:57We've got Andy Noden, a retail advisor from St Helens,
02:01returning after a good win in your first game back in December.
02:05So you're going to kick off the new year with a good performance, I'm sure.
02:09Collects vintage toys and advertising memorabilia.
02:12And you're joined, Andy, by Peter Wilson,
02:16from Kelso in the Scottish Borders.
02:19Big cricket fan, golf fan, pretty good golfer too.
02:23Handicap of 11. That's not bad.
02:25Not too bad. He's a big guy, he's got a big swing.
02:27Yeah. Yeah, all right.
02:29Let's have a big round of applause then for big Peter Wilson and Andy Noden.
02:38And over in the corner, Susie as ever.
02:42Happy New Year, Susie. And to you, Nick, and to everybody watching.
02:45Susie's on Twitter, you know.
02:47And she is making a huge impact.
02:49You are entertaining, educating the public. It's fantastic.
02:54And somebody else who educates and amuses the public
02:57is our guest today, the wonderful John Coleshaw,
03:01comedian and impressionist. Well done.
03:03And thanks for coming back again.
03:05It is a pleasure. Happy New Year.
03:07There's no better place to be at the start of January
03:09than right here in my favourite corner of the mall.
03:11Thank you very much. Well done, John.
03:13Now let's get down to business. Andy, take us away.
03:16First show of the year. Make the most of it.

04:27United.
04:28Yes.
04:29Nothing to squabble about?
04:31Nothing at all, no.
04:32What have we got in the corner there?
04:34Further sixes. Never really got past the six barrier with this one.
04:37Intake was there, as well as tanked.
04:40Tanked. A word describing something that might not have done very well.
04:44It tanked. So that was there for another six.
04:47OK. And, in fact, it used to be used in boxing, didn't it?
04:50If you threw a fight, I think you tanked.
04:54Yeah, I think so, yeah.
04:56You know, they tanked a lot of fights in them days, Nick, you know?
05:00Taking a dive. Wicked.
05:03All right. So there we are, six apiece. Let's turn to Peter.

06:19Ebonite.
06:20Ebonite?
06:21Ebonite. Aha!
06:23I like that.
06:24I haven't seen that one and I like it as well.
06:26It's another term for vulcanite.
06:28Fantastic, well done.
06:29Good man.
06:30Very, very good.
06:31Well done.
06:32And in the corner, Susie, John?
06:34Yeah, bovine we got as well for the six.
06:36And another one, bothy.
06:38Oh, bothy, yeah.
06:39Bothy.
06:40It can be a sort of labourer's hut in Scotland
06:43but also a sort of mountain refuge as well.
06:46I'm a bit of a countdown favourite, that one, a bothy.
06:48But we were well beaten.
06:49Very good. Ebonite.
06:50Very good.
06:51Very good, well done, Andy.
06:5213 points then to Peter's six.
06:54And it's numbers time.
06:56Now then, Andy.
06:57Can we have one large, please?
06:58You can indeed, thank you.
07:00One large, one five, little ones for the first numbers game of the year.

08:08Well done, well done.
08:09APPLAUSE
08:11So, 23 plays Peter's 16.
08:15Let's have a teatime teaser, which is Brave As I.
08:19And the clue, brave as I am, this is too rough for me.
08:23Brave as I am, this is too rough for me.
08:34APPLAUSE
08:41Welcome back. I'll have to give you the clue, brave as I am,
08:44this is too rough for me.
08:46And the answer is...
08:48abrasive.
08:49Abrasive.
08:51Now, Andy.
08:5223, Peter on 16.

10:08Can you spell that for me?
10:10G-O-P-U-R-A-S.
10:13Yeah.
10:14They are, in southern India,
10:17large pyramid-shaped towers over the entrance to a temple.
10:21Very, very good. Again.
10:23Fantastic.
10:24Did you know that?
10:25Cross?
10:26Well done, Andy.
10:27I didn't realise.
10:28Well done.
10:29Now, what else have we got?
10:31Yeah, very, very impressive there.
10:33There was a number of sevens.
10:34Aroused was there.
10:35Groused.
10:36Sugared was also there.
10:38I think the word fired is going to be replaced with sugared in time.
10:42Very good.
10:43But there was an eight.
10:44Upgrades was there for eight.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Upgrades. Well done.

11:35MUSIC PLAYS
11:52Andy?
11:53Seven.
11:54A seven, Peter.
11:55Slightly dodgy six.
11:57And your six?
11:58Copter.
11:59A copter.
12:00Andy?
12:01A cuprite.
12:04Throw it to the corner.
12:07Well, if it comes from Andy, you can be pretty sure it's going to be in.
12:10It's a dark red or brownish-black mineral.
12:12Absolutely brilliant.
12:13And I think copter, short for helicopter, obviously, is fine too.
12:16Yeah, that's there.
12:17Well done.
12:18Thank you very much indeed.
12:19And what have we got in the corner there?
12:21A few more sevens were there, Nick.
12:23Picture for seven.
12:24And also one that brings to mind Les Dawson.
12:27Poutier.
12:28LAUGHTER
12:30Poutier for seven.
12:31A very nice countdown word.
12:3437 plays 23.
12:35Now then, Peter, numbers.
12:38Two large and four small, please.
12:40Thank you, Peter.
12:41Two from the top row and four little ones coming up.
12:43And this time, the selection is six, seven, three, four,
12:48and the large, two, 50 and 25.
12:51And the target, 937.
12:54937.
12:56MUSIC PLAYS
13:04MUSIC CONTINUES
13:28Peter.
13:29936.
13:30Andy.
13:31936.
13:32Thank you, Peter.
13:33Sorry, I've not got it written down, though.
13:35So let's hear from you now, then.
13:38It's 25 minus 6.
13:4125 minus 6, 19.
13:43Times by the 50.
13:44950.
13:45Add the rest and then take it away.
13:47And then you have seven, add three, add four for 14,
13:51and one below, 936.
13:53Very good. Now then, Peter.
13:55I did three times six.
13:57Three sixes at 18.
13:59Times 50.
14:00900.
14:01And add the 25, the 7 and the 4.
14:04The 7 and the 4, 11.
14:05Yeah, well done. Same result.
14:07One away.
14:08One away, though. It's a million miles away.
14:11937?
14:12You could have said 50 multiplied by 6 is 300.
14:17Add the 4 for 304, multiply that by 3 for 912
14:22and add on the 25 for 937.
14:24That's the way it's done.
14:26Thank you, Rachel.
14:27APPLAUSE
14:28Well done.
14:29And now, standing at Andy and 44, Peter on 30,
14:34we turn to John.
14:36John Carlshaw, one of our favourite guests.
14:38What have you got for us?
14:39The man of 350 voices.
14:42Well, yes, a bit of a back catalogue, I suppose.
14:45We were recording the Dead Ringers Christmas specials
14:48for Radio 4 a few weeks back
14:50and we were just reminiscing about when the show first went to the TV
14:54and we tried out the hidden camera sketches,
14:57a version of the prank phone calls that we do.
15:00And one of our favourite characters, of course,
15:02was Tom Baker's Doctor Who.
15:04So we decided to put on the costume, the long scarf,
15:07and just to test out whether a hidden camera sketch with Doctor Who
15:11as Tom Baker would work,
15:13we just went out into Ealing Shopping Centre
15:16and did all manner of bizarre things,
15:18like standing on an escalator and calling it a galactic time portal
15:22and wandering into wardrobes in furniture shops
15:26and walking out of another wardrobe as though we'd crossed the dimensions
15:30and travelled through time
15:32and going into DIY shops to tell the shopkeeper to be very careful
15:36because the sink plungers and egg whisks
15:39were actually weaponry for a Dalek.
15:42So we did all of these things and it was a real jolly morning.
15:46And we'd just finished and we thought,
15:48well, that's quite good, this could work as a sketch,
15:50we'll do this in the main series.
15:52And then I noticed there was a taxi rank
15:54and there was a lady getting into the taxi
15:56and she was... a lot of shopping bags,
15:58she was carrying a lot of Christmas shopping kit.
16:02And we thought, well, what would the Doctor do?
16:06You know, he's an old-fashioned hero,
16:08he would go and help the lady with her shopping.
16:11So I walked up and said,
16:12My dear, my dear, I am the Doctor, let me help you.
16:16And the lady turned round and, of all people,
16:20that lady was Elizabeth Sladen, who had played Sarah Jane Smith,
16:25Tom Baker's first companion, one of the key companions in Doctor Who.
16:30Much missed Sarah Jane Smith, Elizabeth Sladen, nowadays.
16:33But of all people, of all coincidences, it was her.
16:37And she turned around and saw me dressed as Doctor Who
16:39and thought, oh, good grief, some mad fan.
16:42LAUGHTER
16:44She pounced on me here.
16:45But no, we helped her in with the taxi and said,
16:48Till we meet again, Sarah.
16:50And just a beautiful coincidence.
16:52APPLAUSE
16:58All the people.
16:59Yes, of all people.
17:01Amazing.
17:02It wasn't set up, that's how it unfolded.
17:04Extraordinary.
17:05Thank you, John.
17:06Now then, 44 to Peter's 30.
17:08Andy, you're back on Letters Game.
17:11Rachel, can I start with a vowel, please?
17:13Thank you, Andy.

18:09Seven.
18:10Peter?
18:11Six.
18:12And that six?
18:13Create.
18:14Create. Andy?
18:15Cabaret.
18:16Cabaret.
18:17Very nice.
18:18Not bad, eh?
18:19No.
18:20Now then, John.
18:21Yeah, another rather intriguing seven.
18:24Now, is this abreact?
18:26Abreact, yes.
18:27It sounds like some sort of chemical reaction,
18:29but it's not, actually.
18:30It's from psychoanalysis.
18:32And abreaction is all about releasing a repressed emotion
18:35by reliving an experience.
18:37That's abreaction.
18:39Oh, is that right?
18:4051 to Peter's 30.
18:42And Peter, you're back on with the letters game.
18:46Consonant, please.
18:47Thank you, Peter.

19:15Stand by.
19:41MUSIC
19:47Peter.
19:48A very dodgy eight.
19:50Dodgy eight and Andy.
19:52Might be the same dodgy eight.
19:54This is interesting. Peter.
19:56Sludgier.
19:57Sludgier.
19:58And?
19:59Gilders.
20:00Gilders.
20:02Both absolutely fine.
20:04Gilders were the basic monetary unit of the Netherlands
20:06prior to the euro, and sludgier...
20:08We all know what sludgier is, it's such a great word.
20:11Very good. Gilders.
20:15Well done indeed.
20:16So, 59 plays 38.
20:18And Andy, you're back with Rachel.
20:20Numbers.
20:22One large pleater, Essel.
20:24Thank you, Andy. One from the top row again.
20:26And five more little ones.
20:28And for this round, the little ones are six, two,
20:31another six, another two,
20:34ten, and the large one's 75.
20:37And the target, 354.
20:39MUSIC
21:10Andy?
21:11351.
21:13351. Peter?
21:15357, not properly written down.
21:17I think we'll hear from Peter.
21:21Ten divided by two.
21:23Ten over two is five.
21:25Times 75.
21:26375.
21:28And six times two is 12.
21:30Six times the other two, 12.
21:32Add the six.
21:33Add the other six for 18.
21:35And take that off.
21:36And, yes, well done. 357.
21:38Three away.
21:39Three away. Andy?
21:41Ten over five.
21:42Sorry, ten over two.
21:43Ten over two for five again.
21:45Times five is 75.
21:46375 again.
21:47Six times...
21:51Er...
21:53Sorry, I've gone long.
21:55Gone long, yes.
21:56Bad luck.
21:57And so it is that we turn to Rachel.
22:00In desperation, Rachel. 354.
22:02You could have said six times ten is 60.
22:06Two divided by two is one.
22:08Take the one from the 60 for 59
22:10and multiply by the other six.
22:12354.
22:13There we are.
22:14APPLAUSE
22:15Well done, Rachel.
22:17Fantastic.
22:18So, 59 to Peter's 45.
22:21Plenty of time.
22:23Let's have a teatime teaser now, which is scale ten and clue.
22:27On a scale of one to ten, it gets a ten for hygiene.
22:30On a scale of one to ten, it gets a ten for hygiene.
22:35MUSIC
22:41APPLAUSE
22:49Welcome back.
22:50I left you with the clue.
22:51On a scale of one to ten, it gets a ten for hygiene.
22:55And the answer is...
22:57cleanest.
22:59Cleanest.

25:35Andy?
25:36Six.
25:37A six, Peter. Six also.
25:39Andy?
25:40Famous.
25:41Yes, Peter.
25:42Forums.
25:43Forums.
25:45Very good, yes. That's our standard plural these days.
25:48In an ancient Roman city, they talked about the fora,
25:52but today we talk about forums.
25:54Mm. Like stadiums and stadia?
25:57Yes, pretty much the same.
25:59Letting things slip again, Susie.
26:01There we are. Well done.
26:03So, 83 plays up. Peter's 51.
26:05Now, then, we turn back to Susie, our language diva.
26:11What have you got for us today on your origins of words?
26:15I'm going to talk about the word toff,
26:17because it was a very old-fashioned word.
26:20In fact, it still is a bit of an old-fashioned word,
26:22but it came back into fashion two or three years ago
26:25when people started to debate about fox hunting,
26:27and also Boris Johnson is regularly described in the press as a toff,
26:31because he uses words like cripes.
26:34So, for a while, cripes came back in.
26:37So I'm going to tell you the origin of the word toff.
26:40And it's supposed to be a varied tuft,
26:43because at Oxford and Cambridge in the 19th century,
26:46an undergraduate who had an aristocratic title
26:49was entitled to wear not a black tassel on his mortarboard,
26:54like the rest of them, but a gold one,
26:56to show that he was one of the nobility and the elite.
27:00And these gentlemen, and they were, of course, always men in those days,
27:04became known as tufts.
27:06So they were the tufts of Oxford and Cambridge.
27:09And unsurprisingly, a lot of people who would nowadays be called social climbers
27:15decided to gather around these tufts
27:17and see if they could hang on to them and rise with them socially.
27:21And they became known as tuft hunters.
27:24And over time, tuft hunter and tuft itself
27:28sort of swallowed or garbled a little bit and became toff.
27:32And when we refer to somebody as toffee-nosed,
27:34we're looking back to these toffs as well,
27:36because they walk around with their nose in the air.
27:38That's the sort of idea of a tuft or a toff.
27:41And finally, I mentioned mortarboard.
27:43You can probably guess that this term looks back to a bricklayer
27:46or a mason's square board for carrying mortar.
27:49Brilliant.
27:54Wonderful. Susie Dent, you make me real.
27:57I hope in a good way.
27:59Always in a good way.
28:00Now, 83 to Peter's 51.
28:02Peter, what will you do? Letters game.

29:24Excellent.
29:25Pithead.
29:26Very, very good.
29:27Anything else in the corner?
29:28Well, we had one other seven that we were wondering about.
29:32Faithed we looked at for seven,
29:35but when we came to check it, sadly, faithed was not allowed.
29:39The dictionary asked me if I was looking for fathead instead.
29:43As opposed to pithead.
29:45All right. Anything else?
29:46Nothing else.
29:47That's it. All right.
29:48Now then, Andy, final letters game for you.

30:59Yes.
31:00Especially underwear. Small items of clothing.
31:03Squeezing out one's smalls.
31:06Possibly.
31:08There was rather a nifty little seven in there.
31:11Actually, slaloms.
31:13Take something and pluralise it, so that was rather good.
31:16Great Norwegian word, that one.
31:18All right. Smalls and slaloms.
31:20Excellent.
31:2257 for Peter, 96 for Andy.
31:25My word, Peter.

32:42And multiply by 2 for 178.
32:44Oh, sorry, I've miscounted.
32:46Sorry about that.
32:48Bad luck.
32:50All our hopes and expectations lie with Rachel.
32:54187, is that tricky?
32:56You could have got there if you say 9 plus 5 is 14,
33:011 plus 7 is 8,
33:03times those two together for 112,
33:05and then add on the 75 for 187.
33:07There we are.
33:08Gentlemen, 187.
33:10Thank you, Rachel.
33:13So there we are.
