00:19To speak of Kurdistan is merely to refer to the grouping of the Kurdish settlement areas

00:26Yet there is no talk of a united Kurdistan.

00:30For decades, the Kurds have been an object of power plays in these countries.

00:34Their efforts for more rights as a people have suffered constant and brutal suppression.

00:40But the geopolitical situation in the region shifted in favour of the Kurds at the start

00:44of the civil war in Iraq and Syria.

00:48In the fight against the terrorist organisation Islamic State, they have become an indispensable

00:52actor in the Middle East.

00:57For their attitude towards this organisation, the Kurds have garnered great respect internationally.
