New long-distance rowing race in southern Tasmania

A new long distance rowing race took place in southern Tasmania today. Organisers are glad the Huon River’s spectacular scenery is being utilised more for rowing. With the aim to create more races to attract rowers from across the globe.

00:00Gliding through spectacular scenery.

00:05It was challenging but it was beautiful.

00:09The river down here is always a nice part of the world.

00:12It's the first long distance rowing race to be held on the Huon River.

00:1624 crews made of 128 competitors went winding down the 8km course in a variety of boat sizes.

00:25Normally you've got the 8 lanes but here at Franklin we don't have any lanes

00:28and we were given a briefing before the race to kind of give us some tips on where to go.

00:32Did you collide with any other boats?

00:34No, no, no we didn't. We saw a couple of potential collisions but we were okay.

00:40The race started in Franklin and finished near the Huonville Bridge.

00:44The hardest part about today was probably rowing back after you'd just done an 8km race.

00:48Organisers believe there is a lot of untapped potential for rowing here in Tasmania

00:53and on a sunny day like this you can see why.

00:56They want to create more races like this one and make Tasmania a rowing hotspot.

01:01Hopefully we can rival some of the events that are on the mainland

01:04and bring international crews down and have a bit of a race.

01:08Who wouldn't want to come here, look how beautiful it is.

01:10I'd like to see some more coastal rowing and utilising different parts of the state

01:15so we don't need rivers, we can use different parts of the coastline to actually participate and have competitions.

01:21With over 60,000 rowers in Australia, it's a large market to tap into.
