Schools across Leeds are being invited to back a city-wide campaign encouraging children
00:05
and young people to ditch their devices for a week.
00:09
Leeds City Council is launching Disconnect to Reconnect between the 21st and 25th of
00:14
October to inspire young people to think about their smart device usage and consider a more
00:20
balanced approach.
00:21
The campaign is open to both secondary and primary schools and follows the most recent
00:25
results of the My Health My Schools survey.
00:28
It found 54% of the 5,874 pupils surveyed in years 5 and 6 reported spending two hours
00:36
or more each day on screens.
00:38
In secondary schools, this figure rose to 77% of responses across years 7, 9 and 11
00:45
and 85% of the responses from students in post-16 settings.
00:50
The week follows a pilot week in March and will provide a range of activities and projects
00:54
for students and families to encourage a healthier and more mindful use of smart device technology.
