An opposition MP has raised concerns over the warm welcome given to two Chinese naval
00:07
ships that docked in Penang last Saturday.
00:11
Perikatan Nasional's Indira Mokuta MP, Saifuddin Abdullah, also criticised the move to allow
00:16
the Chinese crew members to visit a school.
00:20
He questioned whether the foreign ministry was consulted beforehand, or if the decision
00:24
was made by the defence minister.
00:27
Saifuddin, who was the foreign minister during the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration, said
00:33
the government should be more sensitive to public sentiment.
00:36
He said this was especially crucial given the frequent reports of Chinese intrusions
00:41
into waters near Sabah and Sarawak, and the protests Petronas has received regarding its
00:46
activities in Kasawari.
00:49
The Chinese naval ships, Qi Jiguang and Jinggangshan, docked in Penang on Saturday for a three-day
00:55
goodwill visit, intended to enhance mutual trust between the Chinese and Malaysian navies.
01:01
It was reported that naval personnel visited a private high school in Penang while making
01:06
courtesy calls to local officials.
