President Macron has met with Ukrainian soldiers training at a military base in France.
00:11
Hurricane Milton has made landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast, bringing storm surges, intense
00:17
winds and flooding.
00:20
President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia's war in Ukraine must end no later than 2025,
00:27
as he called for progress on his country's NATO membership.
00:31
The situation on the battlefield creates an opportunity to make this choice, a choice
00:37
for decisive action to end the war, no later than in 2025.
00:43
And we are counting on President Biden's leadership.
00:47
We rely on the strong and wise steps of Britain, France, Germany and Italy to bring security
00:55
and peace to Europe.
00:58
Zelensky spoke while on a visit to the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, where he is participating
01:04
in the third meeting of the Ukraine-Southeast Europe summit.
01:09
The participants in the summit are expected to adopt a joint Dubrovnik declaration, similar
01:15
to those signed at the summits in Athens and Tirana.
01:19
Zelensky has also signed an agreement with Croatian President Andrej Plenkovic, which
01:24
pledges long-term cooperation between Croatia and Ukraine.
01:28
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Russia's foreign ministry has said it will be impossible to
01:34
achieve peace in Ukraine if the country joins the NATO alliance.
01:39
In her weekly briefing, Maria Zakharova accused the West of attempting to turn Ukraine into
01:44
a springboard for confrontation with Russia.
01:53
For the first time, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Ukrainian soldiers trained
01:57
on French territory on Wednesday.
01:59
In this secret military base in eastern France, everything is done to replicate the exact
02:05
conditions on the battlefield, like these trenches that have been specifically dug for
02:10
the training.
02:11
French military have had to adapt to the Ukrainian army's needs in their fight against Russia's
02:16
full-scale invasion.
02:17
The threat that we have to face in terms of instruction is rather oriented towards the
02:26
knowledge of the drone today, so we take it into account in the realization of the trenches
02:32
and especially the camouflage side.
02:35
Over the next two months, 2,300 Ukrainian soldiers will be trained in this camp.
02:41
Most of them are young recruits who have already completed some sort of basic training course.
02:46
They have already completed a few weeks of training in Ukraine before coming to France.
02:52
We teach them the know-how we have, the methods of work, and we do it in the form of a partnership,
02:59
so it's really an exchange.
03:01
France is the first country to train an entire Ukrainian brigade on its soil.
03:06
This visit comes right before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's trip to Paris on Thursday
03:12
for bilateral talks with the French leader.
03:15
Sofia Katsenkova reporting from Paris for Euronews.
03:24
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban divided the European Parliament in the French city
03:29
of Strasbourg.
03:32
Orban's speech on Hungary's presidency received approval from radical right groups and critique
03:36
from others.
03:39
The head of Hungary's main opposition party, TISA, Peter Magyar, voiced his concern over
03:44
Orban's address.
03:47
He didn't give any reply to the questions concerning the collapsed health care system,
03:54
the collapsed education system, the public transport, the collapsed Hungarian economy,
04:00
the budget situation.
04:02
He didn't reply to anything.
04:03
He just said some personal critics and spoke about Brussels' bureaucracy and the fight
04:11
between Hungary and the European Union.
04:13
Several leftist MEPs protested against Orban's authoritarian rule outside of the chamber,
04:19
some even boycotting his opening speech and entering only for the debate.
04:24
They are especially concerned about respect for democracy and the rule of law in Hungary,
04:28
as well as Orban's stance on immigration and foreign policy.
04:33
Green MEP Daniel Freund openly called Orban a dictator.
04:40
It's a lost presidency.
04:42
We will see pretty much zero progress on any of the legislative negotiations.
04:47
But then comes the additional risk where Orban misuses his presidency.
04:52
And we have already seen that when he went to see Putin and Xi and Donald Trump.
04:58
And I fear that we haven't seen all of that yet.
05:01
We're facing an extremely tight U.S. election on the 5th of November.
05:06
So what happens if Orban, on behalf of the European Union supposedly, tries to intervene
05:14
into the U.S. election?
05:16
The Hungarian prime minister received support from his political group, the Patriots for
05:20
Europe and other far-right groups.
05:22
It was a very concrete and focused intervention on the emergencies that a presidency should
05:31
face.
05:32
So with a particular focus on the issue of energy costs, on the competitiveness of European
05:38
companies in dealing with the outside world, with a focus also on the issue of border protection.
05:48
At the end of the debate, Orban received applause from one side of the room and loud boos from
05:53
the other.
05:58
Addressing issues related to family and demography will be at the centre of the upcoming European
06:03
Congress on Family, organised by the ISIA party in Croatia.
06:08
In a briefing held in Rome, the parties' secretary-general Antonio Giordano, alongside representatives
06:13
of Brothers of Italy, explained the focus of the event and why these topics are central
06:18
to the Conservatives' political agenda.
06:21
The theme is certainly value, on which the Conservatives have a very clear idea.
06:27
Great openness to all kinds of rights, but with the family at the centre.
06:32
Then there are the economic challenges that families face, and this will be discussed with
06:41
economists.
06:42
Then there are the technological challenges, because let's not forget that today one of
06:48
the elements of the family crisis is the abandonment of dialogue in favour of social
06:55
media.
06:56
A total of 300 delegates from around the world will attend the event, among them representatives
07:01
from various right-wing forces.
07:04
The ECR's party mission is to strengthen ties among Conservatives around shared values,
07:10
acting as a mediator among different parties.
07:13
When we talk about family, we bring everything together, and so we will have members of the
07:19
People's Party, we will have members of the Patriots, and of course the majority of the
07:23
members will be members of the European Conservative Party.
07:26
In general, the ECR's project is to be the centre of dialogue, so the point of agreement
07:34
where we can speak to our right and our left, and in the future, I hope to go even further
07:42
to the left.
07:43
Family and the fight against the demographic crisis gripping Europe have long been central
07:48
to the ECR and FTI's political agenda.
07:51
In Italy, undoubtedly, we have worrying numbers that need to be put at the centre of the government's
08:00
political agenda, which the government has already done with a series of distancing measures.
08:05
Giorgia Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
08:11
The outbreak of war in the Middle East has raised serious concerns in Europe.
08:16
On Friday, leaders from the nine Mediterranean countries which form the MEDNINE alliance
08:21
are due to meet in Cyprus, where they will discuss the risks posed by the escalating
08:26
conflict between Lebanon, Israel and Gaza, and explore ways to address the deepening
08:31
humanitarian crisis.
08:33
Cypriot democracy, through the initiative Amalthea, is well known that we have contributed
08:39
to a great extent in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but also through the implementation
08:46
of the STI plan, the previous third, we have achieved, so far, the repatriation of 2,000
08:53
citizens from 20 countries, through the cooperation of seven countries that used the spaces,
09:00
the infrastructure of the Cypriot democracy.
09:02
Another major concern for Cyprus is the prospect of another wave of migration from the Middle
09:07
East.
09:09
The island has already been strained by a large influx of refugees, particularly Syrians
09:14
arriving via Lebanon.
09:17
And now Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis is warning that Cyprus has reached its limit.
09:23
We must admit that in the last year, the influx of migrants to Cyprus has decreased
09:30
to a large extent, but it does not stop when there is this situation in the area.
09:37
It is logical that tired people, people who are looking for light at the end of the tunnel,
09:43
should try at some point to come back to Cyprus.
09:47
Last spring, Cyprus received a large number of refugees and immigrants from Lebanon.
09:52
Nikos Christodoulidis and Ursula von der Leyen flew to Virito, which also received a package
09:58
of aid worth 1.2 million euros.
10:01
But the extent of the war changes the facts.
10:04
MEDNINE will examine countermeasures, as a large number of people try to reach Europe
10:11
through Cyprus and Greece.
10:13
From Lefkosia for Euronews, Apostolos Taikos.
10:17
Hurricane Milton has made landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm,
10:25
bringing life-threatening storm surges, flooding, rainfall and extreme winds.
10:32
Gusts travelling as fast as 100 mph have been reported in the Tampa Bay area,
10:38
and flash flood warnings have been issued for nearly 2 million people
10:42
in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
10:45
More than a million people have currently lost power,
10:50
and outages are expected to increase as Milton moves across the state.
10:56
Shelters have been set up across the state for those who have had to evacuate their homes,
11:01
and Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis has warned people to stay inside.
11:08
Stay inside and stay off the roads.
11:10
Floodwaters and rushing storm surge are very dangerous.
11:14
Stay put until the storm has passed.
11:16
If you are in Sarasota, Manatee, some of those areas where the eye of the storm is going,
11:21
it may be where things calm down for a minute.
11:24
Just understand that means you're in the eye, it's going to go back and get really nasty very soon.
11:29
So don't go outdoors until it is confirmed safe.
11:33
Search and rescue operations also continue after multiple tornadoes tore across Florida
11:38
ahead of Milton's approach, destroying around 125 homes.
