00:00You know, if your morning is straight, your day is straight.

00:04And when your day is straight, your life is straight.

00:07So it's like you're saying, when your morning is good, your life is good.

00:11When your morning can be salat on time, istighfar,

00:15it begins with a beautiful supplication to Allah between you and nobody else there,

00:20just you and Allah there, and you get to have a conversation with Allah that morning,

00:24that entire day you will enjoy the blessings of that experience.

00:28Everything about that day will be blessed.

00:30You will wake up late, you will pray salat half asleep, you will do all of that stuff,

00:34and it will have an impact on the rest of your day.

00:37And when you do that istighfar to Allah in the beginning of that day,

00:40that day has barakah, which makes you more sabir, more sadiq, more qanit.

00:46All of these qualities, you get more and more of them because you started with that.

00:51On the one hand, you have those who want to shun the world.

00:53And on the other hand, you have those who want to embrace the world and say,

00:56you know, making more money and enjoying more dunya, etc.

00:59It's part of life and we have to do it, etc. etc.

01:02Without consideration for the spiritual harm of indulging.

01:06The harms of going into indulgence.

01:09Because it can really slowly start eating away at your heart.

01:12You know, from personal experience, and I'm sure you've experienced this too,

01:15the more dunya we immerse ourselves in, even though Allah has made much of it halal on us,

01:21the more we immerse ourselves in it, the harder it becomes for us to be spiritually connected to Allah.

01:26It starts getting harder and harder. It's harder to cry in salat.

01:29It gets harder to concentrate in a dua.

01:31It just gets harder.

01:33The more movies you're gonna watch, the less Quran you're gonna like to listen to.

01:37It's just, it's not a fatwa, it's just gonna happen.

01:40That's just how it is. That's just how life is.

01:43So, this balance is something one has to learn.

01:47And so, those who are subservient.

01:50And of course, if this world has been beautified,

01:54but Allah has beautified the next world far more.

01:57He has beautified that next world far, far more.

02:00Then, infaq is actually a key to strengthening one's faith in the afterlife.

02:07Why?

02:08Spending in the path of Allah, as I've described before, is depositing in your next life.

02:13You know, there are some accounts and some investments like IRAs and things like that.

02:17You don't get to retrieve those funds until you're 59 and a half years old.

02:21Right? You're in your retirement age.

02:23Now you can retrieve those funds.

02:26Okay?

02:27Us spending in the path of Allah is essentially a retirement plan.

02:31That's essentially what that is.

02:33And the more money you put in it, the more you're looking forward to withdrawal day.

02:38If you haven't put much in it, then you're enjoying life now.

02:41But if you start putting money away, it's not money you have access to right now.

02:46It's not.

02:47But the only thing that consoles a person is,

02:50you know what? It's better for me in the long run.

02:53And you know, you'll find people, even in the worldly sense,

02:56there are people who just want the monetary benefits right now.

02:59They're not able to invest in long term investments.

03:01They don't have that kind of patience.

03:03When the business opportunity comes and it says,

03:05you're gonna get the return on your investment in about 10 years.

03:0810 years? No thanks.

03:10I'd rather hold on to my money right now.

03:12Even if it's not gonna grow or multiply over time,

03:14I don't have that kind of long term thing.

03:17I'm too impatient for that.

03:19Where did this ayah begin?

03:21As-sabirin.

03:22People who are going to engage in a long term investment have to have what to begin with?

03:26Have to have patience.

03:28They have to have patience.

03:29And if they have that patience, then when they get to that subservience and the call is made,

03:33they're able to spend without a problem.

03:35They're able to let go of one of the things that gives them,

03:38what gives us comfort in life is money.

03:40Without money, you can be in discomfort.

03:43And money is a source of comfort.

03:45And then the next comfort that even the poorest one enjoys is sleep.

03:49That's one form of comfort everybody can have.

03:52You know, even the one in torment in life,

03:55when they're asleep, they're asleep.

03:57All their problems are gone.

03:59At least during those hours of sleep, right?

04:02So that next piece of life that one really enjoys,

04:06it's been taken away because someone who really wants the akhirah,

04:10is al-mustaghfirina bil-ashar.

04:13And those who make istighfar at what time?

04:15Early mornings, they sacrifice their sleep.

04:18They take away that other comfort, that comfort that everybody has.

04:20So there's a special comfort from money.

04:22They start letting go of that,

04:24for an eventual comfort.

04:25And then there's a daily comfort, and that is that of sleep.

04:28You know, people can hate anything else.

04:31They'll love sleep.

04:33They just, sleep is something, I know kids hate it.

04:37Right?

04:38But then they, you know, and most kids, they hate waking up.

04:42They're really cranky when they, if they hate sleeping,

04:44once they fall into it, they love it.

04:47Wasali'u ila maghfiratin min rabbikum.

04:49And rush to forgiveness that comes from your master.

04:52Wajannatin arduhassamawatu wal-ard.

04:55And a jannah, a garden,

04:57whose expanse is the skies and the earth.

04:59Wa'iddat, it has been thoroughly prepared,

05:01completely prepared, for people that have taqwa.

05:04Allahumma ja'ala minhum.

05:05People of taqwa, for the people of taqwa who are cautious.

05:07This time the people of caution,

05:09are given characteristics, qualities.

05:11Who are these people of taqwa?

05:13What does that mean practically?

05:15Allatheena yunfiqoona fis-sarra'i wal-darra'.

05:17The opposite of riba.

05:19Riba is you hold on to your money so it can multiply,

05:21and you can collect more.

05:23The opposite is you keep giving it up.

05:24Those who spend, the muttaqeen who spend,

05:27in al-sarra'i wal-darra',

05:29in easy times and in hard times.

05:31Darra' when times are hard and tough.

05:33Wal-kathi min al-ghaitha'.

05:35So first of all you have an attitude of spending all the time.

05:38You never spare an opportunity for that.

05:40The second is al-kathi min al-ghaitha'.

05:42Kathama can mean to swallow.

05:44One of its meanings is to swallow.

05:46But there's another meaning also.

05:47They say, for example,

05:49Kathama al-siqaa'.

05:50Al-siqaa' is a container of water.

05:52When you fill it to the top and unclose it,

05:54so no water gets out,

05:55but it's got to be filled to the top,

05:56that's Kathama,

05:57to fill something to the top.

05:59Kaveem or Kaveem is a person,

06:02they say is,

06:03or actually before that,

06:04Kaveem,

06:05Kaveem the word,

06:06Kaveem the ism,

06:07is actually for the nasal passage.

06:09And the Arabs would,

06:11in their imagery,

06:12and they would speak figuratively,

06:14they would say when someone's angry,

06:15they're Kaveem.

06:16Which means their nasal passage is full of anger up to here.

06:21Like all the way up to the end of their nasal passage,

06:23they're filled with anger.

06:25You know, people say,

06:26I've had it up to here.

06:28I've had it up to there.

06:29Well, they'd say, they've had it up to here.

06:31Like their breathing is now filled with rage.

06:34But it hasn't come out yet.

06:36In other words,

06:37Kaveem is someone who's extremely enraged,

06:40but it hasn't left the insides of him yet.

06:44It hasn't come out yet.

06:48So those who swallow or keep inside,

06:50Al Ghayb.

06:51The anger that rushes,

06:53makes your blood rush.

06:55The anger that makes you just go,

06:57and you clench your fist,

06:59and you start shaking.

07:01This is Al Ghayb.

07:02Okay?

07:03But Ghayb also is the kind of anger that you,

07:06it's still before retaliation.

07:07It's what you feel before retaliation.

07:10You could say,

07:11anger is bad if you do something about it.

07:13But if you just sit there,

07:14and you just make faces,

07:15and just go grrr,

07:16then it's not bad.

07:17Well actually,

07:18if you do something about it,

07:19that's called Ghadab.

07:20That's the kind of anger that's called Ghadab.

07:23Short of that is,

07:25Ghayb.

07:26Ghadab is you're so angry,

07:27you're ready to do something.

07:28Whatever it may be.

07:29Musa Alayhi Salaam came back to his nation,

07:31Ghadbaana Asifan.

07:33He came with Ghadab.

07:34Did he do something?

07:35Oh yeah.

07:36Okay?

07:37Ghayb is you have rage,

07:38but you don't do something about it yet.

07:41Even that isn't a good thing.

07:43He got angry,

07:44but he didn't do anything.

07:45Allah is saying,

07:46it shouldn't even,

07:47Yes, they feel angry,

07:48but they have self-control enough

07:50that they're able to swallow it,

07:51not even let it show on their face.

07:53That's the kind of self-control

07:55they have on themselves.

07:56وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ

07:58And those who lovingly pardon.

08:01Al-'afu also means to not punish.

08:04It also means someone who is ready for punishment,

08:06you had the power to punish them,

08:07and you decided,

08:08no, it's okay.

08:09Clean slate for you.

08:11This is Al-'afu.

08:13وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ

08:15And those who are ready and willing to pardon people.

08:18وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

08:20And Allah,

08:21He loves those who excel.

08:22Allah in fact is the one who loves those who excel.

08:24So the ayah began with taqwa,

08:26and it graduates to ihsan.

08:28That's an important observation.

08:30Taqwa is already there,

08:31but people who because of their taqwa

08:33are able to accomplish these qualities in their life,

08:35then they will have reached the highest state

08:37that the believer can enjoy,

08:38and that is of ihsan.

08:40The same progression of how taqwa leads to ihsan

08:43will be mentioned in Surah Al-Ma'idah.

08:45ثُمَّ التَّقَوَّا آمَنُوا ثُمَّ التَّقَوَّا

08:48احسَنُوا

08:49Taqwa leading to ihsan will be mentioned later on also.

08:52Now Allah mentions these same people,

08:54people of taqwa,

08:56they're gonna have to spend when it's easy, when it's hard,

08:59implying it's not always gonna be easy for them to spend,

09:02their anger will be tested,

09:04people will do offenses against them,

09:06and they will use that opportunity to find forgiveness for them.

09:09Then Allah adds,

09:10وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً

09:13Those are the very people that if and when,

09:16when the situation arises that they have committed mindlessly,

09:19فَعَلُوا, they didn't think about it, they just did it,

09:21they were impulsive,

09:22فَاحِشَة is anything that brings you close to zina.

09:25The shari'i technical definition that Mufassirun give,

09:28الفَاحِشَة هي التي تُقَرِّبُكَ إِلَى الزِّنَاء

09:32Whatever will bring you close to fornication adultery,

09:34that's fahisha.

09:35Whether that be a glance,

09:37whether that be something you're looking at online,

09:39whether it's something on a computer or TV screen,

09:41whether it's filthy words,

09:43whether it's filthy music,

09:44whatever it may be, it can take many forms.

09:46In simple terms you can say whatever is lewd,

09:49shameless, vulgar, indecent,

09:51that's fahisha.

09:52Okay?

09:53And it says فَاحِشَةً, it's nakira,

09:55which implies they do,

09:56they mindlessly do any act of shamelessness,

09:59it happens.

10:00They did something indecent,

10:03and they got impulsive and they committed such an act,

10:05not the worst of it,

10:06a zina, anything short of that too.

10:08أَوْظَلَبُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ

10:10Or wronged themselves in any other way.

10:13In other words,

10:14fahisha is not the only kind of wrongdoing,

10:16maybe they got angry and said something they shouldn't have said,

10:18they weren't able to swallow their anger,

10:20right, and they said something,

10:22maybe they got jealous,

10:23maybe they lied, maybe they cheated,

10:25maybe they just got away from trouble with their parents,

10:28they kind of made a little white lie,

10:29not that harmful, but they, you know,

10:31how's it going, everything's fine,

10:33yes, it's okay,

10:34where are you, in the masjid?

10:35You're not in the masjid.

10:38Okay.

10:39Did you go to class?

10:40Yes, of course.

10:42Of course I was in class.

10:44You know.

10:45So,

10:47it's not that big of a deal.

10:49Any other kind of wrongdoing also,

10:51ذَكَرُوا اللَّهُ

10:52They immediately remembered Allah.
