Tips To Stop Slicing The Driver

00:00Hi, my name's Nick Drane.

00:06I'm a PGA professional and master fitting specialist here at the Titleist Performance

00:10Center at Woburn.

00:11And today we're going to talk about helping you to stop slicing your driver.

00:14The most common reason I see why golfers slice the golf ball is because their setup is not

00:19quite correct.

00:20If we can get you in the right setup in terms of your alignments, your feet, hips, knees,

00:25shoulders, and grip, we can then produce the right golf swing to get the golf ball flying

00:29at its optimum flight and distance.

00:32So typically the slice is caused by an over-the-top swing path with an open club face.

00:37We'll talk about a few fundamentals that are going to help you to prevent you from doing

00:40this.

00:41So the first one is going to be our ball position.

00:43So the ball position we want opposite our left heel.

00:46The shaft and my left arm form one line.

00:50My right shoulder then drops slightly lower than my left, creating a nice angle there.

00:56That's going to allow me to deliver the golf club with a positive angle at the tack and

01:00swing the golf club out to the right.

01:02One of the most common mistakes I see is that, as you can see, my head is positioned behind

01:06the golf ball.

01:07A lot of the time where people slice the golf ball and they cause that over-the-top clubhead

01:11path is where they are too on top of the golf ball.

01:14My shoulders are now pointing away to the left and that causes the club to come across

01:19the golf ball with an open face.

01:21It's going to start left and move right.

01:24By staying behind it with my correct grip, I'm going to control the club face and produce

01:31a nice high straight golf shot.

01:37As well as following these fundamentals, I'd always encourage you to get properly fit for

01:41your driver by a qualified PGA professional using a launch monitor if available.

01:45A couple of additional things you can do to help you preventing your slice.

01:49At Titleist we use a Sure-Fit Hossel.

01:52Through that we can make different lie adjustments to the driver that will help you with your

01:55start line.

01:56Also, we can then adjust the loft.

01:58By adding a little bit of loft, we can also close the club face.

02:01That's also going to help minimize your slice.

02:03I'm now going to demonstrate to you the incorrect setup position.

02:07I've got a weak grip.

02:09That's going to cause the club face to be open.

02:11I'm on top of the golf ball.

02:13My shoulders are pointing to the left.

02:15All these three attributes are going to cause that golf club to go out and across the golf

02:21ball causing it to start left and curve to the right.

02:24What we like to see is that proper setup position.

02:28Ball opposite my left heel.

02:29My head is now positioned behind the golf ball looking this direction.

02:33My correct grip.

02:34I've got the V's of my thumb and forefinger pointing up to my right shoulder.

02:39Now I can make a nice turn behind the golf ball and deliver it with a nice positive angle

02:45of attack.

02:46Hitting it on the up.

02:47Keeping the ball nice and straight and high for optimum distance and direction.
