00:54I'm going to treat this like I'm in school learning a history lesson on an actual tour.
01:02Look, the building is not damaged in any kind of way.
01:17The ancient and mysterious city in Jordan, since the second millennium BC, Petra had
01:23been the capital of the Nabataean kingdom and the intersection of the main commercial
01:28routes between the east and the west.
01:35Here we are in front of Al-Hazneh mausoleum that was built by one of the Nabataean kings
01:40for himself.
01:53Nabataean kings wished to be buried in Petra and their wish came true.
01:58We are approaching one of the royal tombs, the urn tomb.
02:03In the 5th century, this mausoleum was turned into a church.
02:19Among other royal tombs, there is the silk tomb, named for the rich color of the sandstone.
02:24The Corinthian and the palace tombs, they were built at the end of the Nabataean period,
02:29in the 1st century AD.
02:44Look at the small cavities in the rocks.
02:46These are tombs too.
02:47Officials, ministers and other kings' confidants were buried here.
02:52This stone tomb complex was named the Street of Facades.
02:59The main part of the city covered around 3 square kilometers.
03:03At the time of its prosperity, Petra was full of life.
03:07Its population was around 20,000 people.
03:16Now we are approaching the majestic amphitheater.
03:20This is the evidence that Petra wasn't always the city of the dead.
03:24In 106 AD, Petra became a Roman colony and just imagine how this theater gathered 8,000
03:32people to see gladiator fights, races and other entertainments.
03:50To save the water in this dry area, people carved canals right in the cliffs.
04:16Let's get back to Al-Hazna.
04:18It is also called Treasury for a reason.
04:21According to a legend, the treasure of the Egyptian pharaoh is hidden here.
04:41Let's have a closer look at the facade of Al-Hazna.
04:44The 40-meter tall mausoleum is decorated with a fancy pattern.
04:49On the urn you can see bullet marks left by Bedouins who tried to get the legendary treasures
04:54at the beginning of the 20th century.
04:58To reach Petra, one has to walk through the long sea gorge and for 2,000 years this route
05:05has not changed.
05:06Just like tourists enter the city nowadays, in the past ancient caravans arrived in the
05:11oasis after an exhausting journey.
05:14The only difference is the distance of this way.
05:29The modern visitor is brought to the gorge by a car, while thousands of years ago the
05:34transportation was camels.
05:36Only they could cross the Arabian desert to enter the Nabataean capital, one of the
05:41most powerful states of that time, that was created by an Arab nomadic tribe, the Nabataeans.
05:59An hour walk from here, there is a well-preserved temple Ad-Deir.
06:04To get here, you have to pass 800 stair steps.
06:09The temple is almost 50 meters tall and fully carved out of the rock.
06:14Have a closer look at Ad-Deir, the way no one has seen it before.
06:38No tombs were found in the temple, so historians consider it to be the place for solemn gatherings.
07:07In the 4th century it became a Christian monastery.
07:11A series of earthquakes destroyed a major part of Petra, and people finally abandoned
07:17it in the 7th century.
07:22Now Petra is one of the most famous architectural monuments.
07:27Thousands of tourists come here to see this wonder of the world.
