Jack and the Beanstalk
00:06
Once upon a time, there was a poor woman
00:09
who lived in a humble cottage in the countryside
00:13
with her only son, whose name was Jack.
00:17
They owned a cow that gave more milk
00:20
than any other cow in the neighborhood.
00:23
And they made butter and cheese with the extra milk
00:27
and sold it at the market nearby.
00:30
But one day, the cow went dry
00:33
and there was no milk to make butter and cheese.
00:37
There was not even milk for them to drink.
00:40
They eat less and less every day,
00:43
but before long they had almost nothing left to eat
00:47
and no money to buy food.
00:50
Jack was still too young to work,
00:53
and his mother had fallen ill.
00:55
Jack's mother called him to her bedside.
00:59
I am too weak to go out myself, Jack.
01:05
So you must take the cow to the market
01:11
and sell her there for as much money as you can.
01:17
Yes, Mother.
01:19
Jack liked going to market,
01:22
but he was sad that they would have to sell the cow.
01:26
He set out walking slowly
01:29
and had gone about half the way
01:32
when an old man stopped him.
01:34
Hello, do you want to sell that cow?
01:37
I will buy her from you
01:39
in exchange for these magic beans.
01:43
The beans, which were all different colors,
01:46
were very beautiful,
01:48
and the old man had said they were magic.
01:52
So Jack gave him the cow and ran home with the beans.
01:56
Look, Mother, what I've got, he cried
01:59
as he hurried into her room.
02:01
But his mother was furious
02:03
when she saw that he had come home
02:06
without any money for the cow.
02:09
What?
02:10
You have sold our good cow for these worthless beans?
02:15
And she threw them out of the window.
02:18
That evening, Jack and his mother
02:21
ate their last crust of bread
02:24
and went to bed very sadly,
02:27
for they knew that there was nothing left for breakfast.
02:31
Jack woke up early the next morning still hungry.
02:35
He was so hungry, in fact,
02:37
that he jumped out of bed
02:39
and went into the garden to look for something to eat.
02:42
To his amazement,
02:44
he saw that the magic beans had grown into a huge plant
02:49
that stretched right up over the roof
02:51
and disappeared into the sky.
02:54
The stems of the plant were so thickly twisted
02:57
that he could climb up them.
02:59
As if they were the runs of a ladder,
03:02
he began to pull himself up higher and higher
03:05
and higher and higher still.
03:07
At last he reached the top of the beanstalk.
03:11
In front of him was the white road,
03:15
which led to a great castle far in the distance.
03:19
There was no one to be seen,
03:21
so he started to walk along the road.
03:24
Maybe someone at the castle would give him something to eat.
03:28
In any case, it would certainly be an adventure.
03:32
He was hot and tired and hungrier than ever.
03:36
By the time he reached the castle,
03:39
its great gate was shut,
03:42
but Jack knocked on it loudly.
03:45
After a while it was opened
03:47
by a huge, ugly old woman
03:50
who had only one eye in the middle of her forehead.
03:54
Aw, aw, she cried.
03:57
I need a boy just like you
03:59
to clean out for me every day.
04:02
Come in, quickly, come in and hide
04:05
or my husband will see you and eat you up.
04:08
Frightened, Jack hurried inside at once
04:11
and told the giantess that he would become her servant
04:15
in exchange for something to eat.
04:18
She gave him a piece of bread and a glass of buttermilk.
04:22
But while he was drinking it,
04:25
in the castle the walls began to shake with heavy tread
04:30
and Jack could hear the giant coming closer.
04:35
Quick, quick, hide behind the cupboard,
04:38
whispered the giantess, and Jack slipped out of sight.
04:42
As a giant stepped into the room, shouting,
04:46
Ha-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ha-ba-ba
04:49
Fee-fi-la-fa-fa
04:52
I smell the blood of an Englishman
04:55
Be he alive or be he dead
04:58
He he alive or be he dead
05:01
I'll find his bones to make my bread
05:04
Fee-fi-fa-ha-ha-ha
05:07
Nonsense, it's only a nice young elephant
05:10
that I cooked for your breakfast.
05:13
Sit down and eat it while it's hot.
05:16
So the giant sat down to eat his breakfast
05:20
and forgot all about the Englishman
05:23
who stood watching him from behind the cupboard.
05:26
When he had finished, he called out,
05:29
Bring me my magic hen.
05:32
I want to see some new golden eggs.
05:36
Jack could hardly believe his eyes
05:39
when he saw what happened next.
05:41
The giantess brought in the little brown hen
05:44
and put it on the table in front of her husband.
05:47
Aye, you, lay, lay,
05:51
the giant commanded,
05:53
and bloop, bloop, bloop, she immediately laid.
05:57
One, two, and three golden eggs.
06:02
The giant put the eggs into his pockets.
06:06
Then he settled back in his chair
06:09
and soon was snoring so loudly
06:12
that the castle walls shook with the noise.
06:15
Jack crept out from behind the cupboard,
06:18
snatched up the magic hen,
06:21
and ran out of the castle as fast as his legs could carry him
06:25
with the hen tucked under his arm.
06:27
He climbed quickly down the beanstalk
06:30
and hurried into the cottage up to his mother's room.
06:33
She was very happy to see him again.
06:36
She cried with joy, and then she cried some more
06:40
because now they would have as many golden eggs as they wanted
06:45
and never would be poor again.
06:47
But Jack soon began to long for another adventure.
06:51
So one morning, he set out again up the beanstalk.
06:55
Higher, higher, higher, until he reached the top.
07:01
This time, he has dyed his hair black
07:05
and the giantess did not recognize him.
07:09
Oh, you're just the boy to help me clean out the kitchen.
07:13
Run and chase the mice away. Hurry inside.
07:16
Or my husband sees you, he will surely eat you up.
07:21
Jack just had time to dive behind the woodpile
07:25
as the giant came down from his torrent, shouting,
07:29
Fie, fie, fie, ha, ha, ha, ha.
07:32
I smell the blood of an Englishman.
07:35
Be he alive or be he dead,
07:39
I'll grind his bones to make my bread.
07:42
You stupid old giant.
07:44
It's only a fat sow which I grilled for you on this pit.
07:48
Sit down and eat it up quickly before it gets cold.
07:51
The giant was very pleased.
07:54
For after Englishman, grilled pork was his favorite dish.
07:59
By the end of the meal, he felt so cheerful
08:04
that he called out to his wife.
08:06
Woman, bring me my magic harp.
08:11
The giantess brought in a beautiful harp
08:15
inlaid with rubies and diamonds,
08:18
which he had stolen from the fairies many years before.
08:22
Play, harp, play, he said,
08:26
and the harp played a soft tune
08:29
about green mountains and the sea.
08:32
No, no, no, play something more merrier than that.
08:37
Soon the harp played a happy tune,
08:40
which children use to dance.
08:43
Now, play me a lullaby now.
08:47
The harp played a sweet lullaby,
08:50
and soon the giant was fast asleep.
08:54
Then Jack crept out from behind the woodpile
08:57
and picked up the harp, intending to run away with it.
09:01
But as he seized it, it began to shrink.
09:05
Master, master, and its strings jangled together
09:10
and filled the castle with noise.
09:13
The giant woke up to see Jack running out the door with the harp.
09:17
He got up with a roar and lumbered after him
09:21
along the road that led to the beanstalk.
09:24
The earth shook with its heavy tread,
09:27
and Jack could tell that he was getting closer all the time.
09:31
He was very frightened, but he clutched the harp closer
09:35
and ran as fast as he could.
09:38
At last he reached the beanstalk
09:41
and began climbing down it as fast as he could.
09:45
With the harp under his arm, he could hear the giant's shouts
09:49
and feel the beanstalk swaying and shaking under his feet.
09:53
Jack's mother was out in the yard,
09:56
and he shouted to her halfway down the beanstalk,
09:59
Quick, mother, bring me an axe!
10:02
She ran to the woodshed and came back
10:05
with the biggest axe she could find.
10:08
Jack leaped to the ground, trussed the harp into her arm,
10:12
and began hacking away at the beanstalk with all his might.
10:17
Mother, mother, stand clear!
10:20
The beanstalk began to crack
10:22
and sway from side to side as the giant climbed nearer.
10:26
Then Jack slashed through the last stem
10:29
and sprang aside just in time
10:32
As the beanstalk came crashing down,
10:35
bringing with it the giant,
10:37
who hit the ground with such a thud that he was killed at once.
10:42
Jack had had enough adventures to last him for the rest of his life.
10:47
He and his mother lived happily ever after.
