Hurricane Helene Leaves Trail of Destruction Across Southeastern U.S.

Dozens of people are dead and millions of homes are without power after Hurricane Helene slammed into the southeastern United States, making landfall in Florida before moving north to affect Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.

00:00As night fell over the U.S. on Thursday, the Category 4 Hurricane Helene slammed into its

00:12southeastern states, bringing with it deadly winds and dangerous amounts of water.

00:20And as morning broke the next day, the true extent of the devastation was revealed, with

00:26some residents losing everything.

00:53With dozens of people confirmed to have died, thousands of homes destroyed and millions

00:58without power, Hurricane Helene is one of the biggest storms on record to hit the Gulf

01:03Coast.

01:05Among the dead, first responders killed trying to save others.

01:12The storm has since been downgraded to a tropical depression as it makes its way north, but

01:18rescue efforts are just beginning.

01:21We have responded to over 200 medical and fire-related calls, anywhere from power lines

01:27down to burning vehicles, burning homes, as well as any traffic accident, as well as serious

01:33medical calls.

01:35The southeastern states of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina appear to be

01:40the worst hit, with county officials in North Carolina issuing urgent evacuation orders,

01:49warning the Lake Lure Dam could burst.

01:55With whole neighborhoods flattened or swept away, and entire streets submerged, officials

02:01are warning the danger has far from passed.

02:05We also have the potential for flash flooding, and the waters are going to continue to rise

02:11for the next 24 to potentially 48 hours, especially on the northern part of the state.

02:17Despite the ongoing risks, rescue and clean-up efforts continue.

02:22With the death toll expected to rise, the full extent of Hurricane Helene's destruction

02:27has yet to be revealed.
