Malaysia Cleanup Day set to draw 50,000 participants and break three records

The country is organising the Malaysia Cleanup Day nationwide on Sept 28, involving more than 50,000 individuals and 156 local authorities.   As part of the event, the government also launched a campaign that will see retail chains nationwide stop providing single-use plastic bags to customers from Oct 1. 00:16The event, which will start from 8am to 8pm on Saturday, will be launched at Central Market

00:22in Kuala Lumpur.

00:24The Housing and Local Government Ministry said at the pre-launch on Thursday that the

00:28event will involve all levels of society, including students, company's employees,

00:34fire and rescue department personnel, and staff from local authorities.

00:58We set a target of 3,000 metric tons.

01:01Third, the garbage collection.

01:03Usually, people do it in the morning.

01:05This time, this is the longest garbage collection, 12 hours.

01:09Every October, we have the National Waste Day.

01:12So now, in September, we have the Malaysia Cleanup Day.

01:17Because cleanliness is very important for us to raise the national flag and also to improve

01:25the quality of life and well-being of Malaysians.

01:29The event will promote environment conservation initiatives, such as the Say No to Single-Use

01:34Plastic Bags campaign.

01:36Earlier at the launch of the campaign, the ministry said 20 retail grocery chains nationwide

01:41have pledged to no longer provide single-use plastic bags to customers from October 1st.

01:47The ministry said the campaign will involve a total of 7,601 premises to help Malaysia

01:53achieve its goal of eliminating single-use plastics by 2030.

01:58Through the campaign, Malaysia aims to reduce as much as 200 million single-use plastics annually.
