00:00Ashton, I wanted to show you how to express by hand once breastfeeding is established

00:08to start expressing because it's nice to have a store of breast milk in, you know, for some

00:14unexpected event that might happen and you may have to be separated from Sarah.

00:18It's important to wash your hands and sterilize any equipment you're using like the containers

00:21that you're putting the milk into.

00:23It's important to pop your index finger on the bottom just at the outsides, kind of at

00:30the outer edges of the areola and then the thumb on the top.

00:33Now you can use your other fingers to support the breast if you want to and very gently

00:38press down and in a slightly backwards motion too because that's where the little reservoir

00:43is with the milk in it and as you do that gradually you'll start to see some drops of

00:47milk coming to the surface of the nipple.

00:50Quite often hand expressing is useful for if you're engorged or the breasts are very

00:55full when you're trying to get the baby on to relieve some of that and it's quite comfortable

01:00in the shower maybe or in the bath when you've got the heat to do it.

01:03Yeah, if you use a hot flannel or something.

01:05Yeah, if you don't necessarily want to store the milk, if you just want to relieve that

01:08you can just do it in the shower and it'll make the breast a little bit more comfortable

01:13but if you wanted to store the milk then obviously as the milk starts to come through you just

01:18lean slightly forward for this.

01:19This is a little bit different than when you're feeding, when you're feeding you sit up straight

01:23just so that the milk can squirt into the container.
